Buffs fall 4-2 in East Lansing
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Four unanswered goals by Michigan State brought No. 19 Colorado's unbeaten streak to a close, dropping the weekend finale to the Spartans 4-2 on Sunday.
"We didn't play well on either side of the ball today," head coach Danny Sanchez commented. "We were second to everything today and the score reflects that."
The Buffaloes (5-1-2) and Spartans (5-1-2) battled sloppy and rainy conditions throughout the day. The match was suspended for 38 minutes in the 5th minute due to the amount of water on the pitch.
CU came out of the delay and snagged a 1-0 lead early on in the resumption, but the Buffs' high-powered offense was quieted for most of the day.
Michigan State got three goals from Camryn Evans and a fourth from Emily St. Andrus before the Buffs were able to respond in the closing seconds.
Colorado keeper Dani Hansen was tested often, making a season-high nine saves.
"Dani did very well [today]," Sanchez added. "She kept us in the game early. She kept us in the game in the middle, but she wasn't helped out by the players in front of her."
How it Happened
The match got underway as scheduled with heavy rain picking up at kickoff. Inside the 5th minute, the teams were pulled off the field after players were continuously overrunning balls that were just sticking in puddles.
The Buffs found the net first after the delay with Shyra James starting a new scoring streak. Civana Kuhlmann crossed a ball into the center of the box, finding Kayleigh Webb who flicked it on to James. James sent the ball back across the goal towards the far post for her ninth goal of the 2022 campaign.
Colorado would only muster two shots in the first half, getting outshout 12-2. Evans got MSU back to equal in the 33rd minute and the game would be all square at the half.
Evans slotted her second goal of the day in the 48th minute, scoring on a 2-on-1 rush and beating a charging Hansen. The game held at 2-1 up to the 73rd minute when St. Andrus added MSU's third. Evans got the hat trick off a penalty kick in the 86th minute, giving Michigan State a commanding 4-1 lead.
Colorado tinkered with the lineup throughout the afternoon, trying to spark any kind of production.
"We were looking for anyone that was going to perform," Sanchez reiterated. "There were a couple of players that stepped up and put themselves in good postilion as we prepare for Denver. We were just searching for players to step up to the challenge."
The Buffs offense continued to push to the final whistle, paying off in the form of a Webb goal in the 90th minute. Allie Palangi chested a ball to James at the top of the penalty box and James slipped it to Webb atop the goal box, beating MSU's Lauren Kozal for her third goal of the season.
