Buffs Tie Huskies In Seattle

October 22, 2023 | Soccer

SEATTLE, Wash. - Colorado and Washington battled to a 1-1 draw at the Husky Soccer Stadium on a cloudy afternoon as CU closed out its road trip on Sunday.

The Buffaloes are now 10-4-3 on the season and 2-3-3 in Pac-12 competition while the Huskies are now 7-5-4 and 2-4-2 in Pac-12 competition. Both teams have three games remaining on their schedules.

The Buffs and Huskies found themselves in a 0-0 tie at halftime, but the offenses picked up in the second half as each team scored a goal. Colorado struck first in the 60th minute with a penalty kick goal from Ava Priest, her second goal of the season.

"For a super young freshman that was feeling a little bit under the weather, it was a very composed finish and I thought she played very well throughout the game," head coach Danny Sanchez commented afterward.

Despite Colorado taking a 1-0 lead, Washington responded very quickly with a goal of its own just three minutes later, making it 1-1.

"That was a little disappointing. I told the team after our goal we had to get through the next 5-10 minutes and it just didn't happen," stated Sanchez. "However, saying that there were still 30 minutes left in the game for us to get a game-winner and we just couldn't quite get that final pass, that final cross. Credit to Washington, they defended really well in the box."

While the Buffs put up several shots, they weren't able to put them on target, recording just two shots on goal throughout the afternoon. On the defensive end, goalkeeper Jordan Nytes recorded four saves.

How it happened
Both Colorado and Washington started slow with only one shot taken through the first 16 minutes of the game. Hope Leyba saw a great chance in the 19th minute following a CU throw-in but missed the net wide left.

Shortly after, Shyra James had a shot blocked leading to a corner kick for the Buffs. On the corner, Faith Leyba had an opportunity to put Colorado on the board but barely missed left.

In the 36th minute, the Huskies saw their best look of the half with a one-on-one between Kelsey Branson and Nytes. Nytes was able to make an easy save on a slow shot towards the goal.

The Buffs outshot Washington 5-2 in the first half, however, none of Colorado's shots were on target contrary to both of Washington's shots. Nytes had two saves at the break.

The Huskies controlled possession for the majority of the first 15 minutes of the second half. The Buffs were able to regain possession and earned a penalty kick off of a throw-in due to a Washington handball inside the penalty area. Priest converted from the spot to put CU up 1-0.

Just about three minutes later, Washington responded with a goal of its own to tie everything at 1-1 in the 63rd minute.

Washington was given a yellow card in the 81st minute, setting up a CU free kick. The card was followed by two Colorado corner kicks but the Buffs couldn't put the ball in the back of the net.

Juliauna Hayward had a booming shot from outside of the box but just missed the goal with under three minutes remaining in the game. The shot would've given the Buffs the lead, however Colorado had to settle for a 1-1 tie as the final whistle blew.

Upcoming
The Buffs will return home to Boulder to play Arizona on Thursday, October 26th and Arizona State on Sunday, October 29th.

Quotes
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On message to the team after the game: "I told the team after the game I thought we played really well in long stretches. We didn't create a ton of opportunities in the final third, but really played well from the back third through the middle third. It's disappointing to give up the goal basically right after we got the goal, but I thought we pressed well at the end. It's just a little unfortunate to not get the game-winner."

Notes
Colorado is now 5-4-5 all-time against Washington … the Buffs committed just seven fouls compared to Washington's 14 … CU outshot UW 12-9 … two of Colorado's shots were on goal while five of Washington's were on goal … both teams had seven corner kicks…James returned the lineup after missing Thursday's match at Washington State.
