Buffs Take On Indiana at Home For Team IMPACT Match
February 18, 2023 | Tennis
BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes tennis team will be back in action for the second time in 36 hours as
the team hosts Team IMPACT/Leukemia Awareness match against Indiana at 10 a.m. here at the
Meadows Tennis Club.
The Buffs are coming off a thrilling 4-3 victory over BYU Friday night culminated by a win at No. 6 singles
by freshman Carri Hayes to clinch the match and earn her first career win at a Buff. Senior Antonia
Balzert and sophomore Aya El Sayed both picked up singles wins and a doubles win that were key in the
Buffs victory.
This year the team was fortunate enough to sign a pair of sisters in eight-year-old Clara Chi-Hasselback
and her five-year-old sister Allison to Team Impact National Letters Of Intent. The match against Indiana
will be a Leukemia awareness match with both of our signees in attendance, and the first 100 fans in
attendance will get a free color changing cup to support awareness for Leukemia.
Antonia Balzert loves every chance to see Clara and Allison and is excited for them to be at the match on Sunday.
She knows the strength that they both have, and wants the opportunity to play for them against
Indiana.
"It's super exciting," Balzert said. "I can't wait to see their smiles and their happiness. I'm excited to play
for a bigger purpose and play for them on Sunday."
Head Coach Anthony Pham knows the importance of Team IMPACT for everyone involved. Back in
November when Clara and Allison signed, Pham spoke about the qualities that Colorado players posses
and Clara and Allison are no different.
"The one common theme about playing tennis for Colorado is that we ask our players to play fearless,
selfless and never give up," Pham said. "We know that Clara and Allison embody all of those qualities.
We are so happy to have them in the CU family. The sister's have been great, we're just happy to get to
recognize them more formally."
The Buffs are currently on a four-match win streak headed into Sunday, as well as looking to start the
season 7-1 for the first time since 2016-17. To do that they will have to beat Indiana in the first matchup
between the two in school history, the Buffs will look to start the matchup 1-0. Indiana comes in with a
record of 5-3 most recently dropping a match on Friday against Utah 5-2.
Team IMPACT is a program that matches children facing serious illness and disability with college sports
teams, creating a long-term, life-changing experience for everyone involved. For a healthy child, there
are a number of systems through their family, school, or larger community where they are able to find
support and socialization.
For children living with a serious illness or disability, these systems can be strained. Team IMPACT
provides a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment for a child and their family to connect with a
college athletic team and local campus community.
The Meadows Tennis Club is located at 5555 Racquet Court in east Boulder. Racquet Lane is located
between Arapahoe Avenue and Baseline Avenue on 55 th Street. There is no cost to attend the match.
