Buffs Secure First Pac-12 Win

CU earns 3-1 victory over Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. – The Colorado Buffaloes dominated the second half on the road against Oregon on its way to a 3-1 victory Thursday night at Pape Field. The win marked CU's first conference win of the season and its first on the road since the 2021 season.

Colorado (9-2-0, 1-1-0) got on the board first behind a goal from senior Shyra James. Oregon (0-8-2, 0-2-0) would get back to even just past the midway point of the opening half, but from the first touch out of the locker room the Buffs dominated, scoring two goals in the span of 61 seconds from Ally Clark and Emerson Layne to put the game away.

"We knew this was a dangerous game, Oregon's much better than its record," head coach Danny Sanchez said after the game. "We got the early goal from Shyra [James] but it really was against the run of play, Oregon deservedly tied it. I was really pleased with how we kept our composure. Sometimes when you are winning a game like that you can start to press but I thought the second half we played really well. We kept our composure, created a lot of chances and had very good goals from Ally [Clark] and Emerson [Layne]."

The Buffs controlled the ball throughout the second half, outshooting Oregon 22-10 overall but 12-4 after halftime. Goalkeeper Jordan Nytes made two saves early but did not see a shot on goal after the Ducks goal in the 29'. Senior Lindsey Smith came on in relief for Nytes in the 85th minute.

"Oregon came out with something to prove," Sanchez commented. "They had a lot of really good chances and a lot of long-range shots early in the match that Jordan [Nytes] dealt with that kept us in it."

How It Happened
Colorado's offense wasted no time getting on the board. The Buffs took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute off of the right foot of James. Ava Priest forced an Oregon turnover just outside the 18-yard mark and sent the ball inside the box to assist on James' ninth goal of the season.

The Buffs continued to push the ball looking for opportunities to extend the lead, including a great chance by Juliauna Hayward in the 17th minute.

The Ducks climbed back to even on their first corner kick of the night, sneaking one past Nytes in the 29th minute. The offensive chances became few and far between following the Oregon goal, with the Buffs getting credit for the only shot on net in the final 16 minutes of the half.

The second half was controlled by the Buffs from the start. After two early shots a free kick gave them an opportunity to jump back in front. Rachel Rosen served the ball into the box from the far sideline, finding Greer Maguire in the middle of the scramble. The ball deflected off Maguire and directly to Clark who slotted it right down the middle for the game-winner in the 62nd minute.

"I think it was really important to get that second goal first in the second half and to get it early in the second half so that we had momentum for the rest of the second half," Clark spoke on her goal. "I was just in the right place at the right time and was able to put it in the back of the net, which felt really good."

Colorado wasted no time extending the lead, off another ball in the air that found Layne in the 63rd minute. She volleyed the ball off her chest and put a strong left foot on the ball from the same spot Clark scored a minute earlier, putting the game away for the Buffs.

Up Next
The Buffs stay on the road but don't have to travel far, taking Oregon State (2 p.m. MT) on Sunday. The Beavers (3-3-4, 0-1-1) tied against Utah on Thursday night.

Quotes
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On the second goal
"We had to find that second goal. As the game was stretching on it's just human nature to start to press a little bit. Ally [Clark] smashing that ball in after a nice serve from Rachel [Rosen] was key and then we fed off that momentum and Emerson [Layne] getting the next one."

On winning on the road
"I told the team after the game you go on the road anywhere against anybody is difficult. Especially coming in to play on artificial surface that we never play on in the fall. You have to have a different mentality when you go on the road, and the mentality we have the second half is the mentality we need going forward if we're gonna get results."

Graduate Student Ally Clark
On winning the first game in the Pac-12
"It's crucial to get that first one. So, it was really clutch that we got it tonight. It's momentum going into the Sunday's game against Oregon State."
