Records Fall in the Buffs' Shutout Win over Arizona

Hope Leyba and Jordan Nytes move to the top of the record books
BOULDER -- No. 22 Colorado defeated Arizona 1-0 on Sunday on Senior Day at Prentup Field. The Buffaloes had two records fall in the win, with Hope Leyba becoming the program's single-season goal leader, while Jordan Nytes secured her program record 26th career shutout.
Colorado (13-2-3, 7-1-2) finished the season unbeaten at home in the regular season for the first time in program history, wrapping things up with a 10-0-2 record at Prentup Field.
Leyba passed Nikki Marshall's previous record of 17 goals in 2006. Nytes moved ahead of both Jessica Keller (2003-05) and Jalen Tompkins (2015-19).
"You can't even put it into words what it means," associate head coach Jason Green expressed after the win. "Some great players held those records. Nikki was here today to watch Hope break her record. Nikki was very proud and brought her flowers. That was pretty cool. Jordi broke the record of two players, but one player whom I knew very well was JJ Tompkins, and JJ sent Jordi a nice video. To break records that are that long-standing by great players in the past means that we have something great as well."
The Buffs secured the win with Leyba's record-breaking goal in the first half, and the defense held Arizona to just two shots on goal, both in the second half. Nytes had a relatively calm day in net compared to her 10-save effort on Thursday, needing just two saves to keep the clean sheet intact.
Fittingly, the primary assist on Hope's goal was attributed to her sister, Faith Leyba. Carley Swierenga also assisted on the tally, marking her ninth of the season.
"We actually had this planned," Hope stated. "She told me this morning that if she was wide open, she was still going to pass to me so I could break the record. It was planned, and it means a lot."
How It Happened
Both sides fired off seven shots in the first half, but the Buffs were the aggressors, landing four on target.
Leyba's goal cut the tension in the 27th minute. Swierenga served up a free kick into the box that Faith put on target, forcing a save from Olivia Ramey, and the rebound bounced back to Hope, who slid to the ground and put the ball into the empty net for her 18th of the season.
"We couldn't have done this without each other," Hope explained about her teammates. "If Jordi doesn't play like she does, then I can't score. We just rely on each other, and that's how we break records."
Arizona outshot the Buffs 5-4 in the second half and led in corner attempts 4-3, but the Colorado backline held strong, only allowing the two shots on goal.
"Everyone defended," Green added. "If you look, Jordi had the shutout, but did she really have to make a big save? I don't think so. So, her back four in front of her were fantastic. To see everyone work hard for each other, they're just winners. That's what Dave [Morgan] talks about all the time. They're a group of winners and they're going to win, no matter what."
