The Buffs drop just their second on the home floor
BOULDER – Colorado women's basketball dropped its first home contest since the end of November, suffering an 84-62 result against No. 19 Baylor.
The loss is just the second for the Buffs on their home floor, falling to 13-2 at the CU Events Center this season.
Colorado (17-9, 8-7 Big 12) welcomed back Jade Masogayo to the lineup on Wednesday but got the news that Lior Garzon would be out of the lineup in the same breath. Masogayo led the team with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting, playing 18 minutes in her return to the floor. Graduate transfer Johanna Teder led the team in minutes (34), finishing 6-for-9 shooting with 14 points.
"I'm not going to make any excuses, but the reality is, yeah, we're missing a lot of players that play in our rotation, and it's difficult," head coach JR Payne said about the team's rotation. "Baylor, also, is a really good team, and so at full strength here in Boulder, I think might have been a different outcome, but that's not the cards we've been dealt."
Baylor (23-5, 13-2 Big 12) had four of its starting five finish in double figures and, as a team, hit 14 3-pointers. Bella Fontleroy led the Bears with a game-high 21 points. Former Buff Aaronette Vonleh, playing sparingly on the night, recorded 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Buffs got down by as many as 38 points in the third quarter, their largest deficit of the season. Colorado continued to fight in the fourth quarter, outscoring Baylor 24-8, to narrow the gap to 22.
"Baylor is a really great team, and I thought we played hard most of the game," Payne stated. "Shots weren't really falling for us in the first half, and they were falling at a very high rate for them. I think we got down to a number that was difficult to come back from, but I thought our effort was tremendous in the fourth quarter in particular, people diving on the floor for balls and working to fight and battle for possessions. So, a lot of good things. We have to continue to try to get healthy, regroup, and come back again on Saturday."
The Buffs remain eighth in the conference standings, holding onto the final first-round bye at the upcoming Big 12 Tournament. Colorado heads into the final three games with a one-game lead over Arizona and Cincinnati in the seeding.
"We've shown this season already that if we lock in and play our game, we can beat really good teams," Teder expressed. " OSU, [CU's next opponent] they are tough but have also had tough losses. They also have nothing to lose. We have to give everything, and whoever we have in the lineup just plays our hearts out. We don't have much [season] left."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Early on, the game was back and forth, with the teams trading the lead three times before a Sara Andrew free-throw put Baylor up 9-8 with 4:28 to go in the period. Baylor got the 3-ball going early, hitting 4-for-8 in the first quarter. CU's answer early on was Masaogayo, who totaled eight of her 16 points in the opening frame. The Bears took their largest lead of the quarter with a half-court heave from Jada Walker to go up 22-14.
Baylor opened the first 4:19 of the second quarter with a 17-3 run, extending its lead to 39-17. Baylor hit 50.0% (8-16) from the floor in the second quarter and scored 10 points off seven Colorado turnovers. A Fontleroy 3-pointer put Baylor up 26, 47-21, with just over two minutes left to halftime and led by 23 at the break.
Masogayo and Teder combined for the first four points of the third quarter, getting CU back within 19, 47-28. That would be as close as the Buffs would get the rest of the night, as the team converted just three more field goals in the quarter. Baylor closed the period on a 7-0 run and outscored CU 29-14 in the quarter to take a 76-38 lead.
Playing with a freshman-heavy lineup in the fourth quarter, Colorado outscored Baylor 24-8 in the final 10 minutes. Grace Oliver, Kennedy Sanders and Erin Powell played the entirety of the final quarter. Sanders recorded six of her nine points, while Powell and Oliver contributed five and three, respectively. The Buffs hit 75.0% (9-12) in the quarter, matching their first-half production.
"I'm truly proud of them," Teder noted about the younger players. "Last game showed that they have so much ahead, and they're really coachable. The last quarter showed they can give everything if asked, and sometimes you don't even have to ask, and they will give everything. It's been fun to play with them. They run. They get stops and defense. I respect and am really proud of them."
