Buffs Set for Big 12 Championship

April 15, 2025 | Tennis

BOULDER – Colorado opens its first Big 12 Championship since 2011 with a rematch with 11-seeded Iowa State Cyclones on Wednesday night (5:00 p.m. MT, ESPN+) at the Hurd Tennis Center.

"We didn't close our last match against Arizona State, but we put ourselves right at the doorstep again. We just have to keep telling ourselves that if we execute a couple more points and situations, the results will be different. We know we can compete with anyone. Starting with Iowa State on Wednesday, if we bring the right focus, the energy in doubles, we've got a good shot."

The matchup in Boulder earlier this season was a tough result for Colorado. The Buffs held a 3-2 lead, and when they were eventually tied at 3-3, Betina Tokac had a 4-3 lead in the final set but defaulted, giving Iowa State an early conference win.

Colorado's lineup looks different than when they took on the Cyclones at the end of February. Without Aya El Sayed and Rixt van der Werff, the Buffs will only have one doubles team that is the same. El Sayed and Van der Werff were the only two who won their singles match against Iowa State.

Colorado is playing in the Big 12 Championship for the first time since 2011 and will look to win its first match since 2010. After an extended period in the Pac-12, the team is excited to compete in the Big 12 Championships.

"We've only been in the Pac-12," Senior, Mila Stanojevic said. "I'm excited to see what the Big 12 tournament has in store for us. I think we will have a good chance in the first round against Iowa State; it'll be exciting."

Iowa State enters the tournament splitting the last four matches, going 2-2. They took down Utah and Kansas State and had losses to Kansas and Oklahoma State. Colorado is 5-0 all-time in neutral site matches against Iowa State.

The winner will advance to Thursday's second round match against sixth-seeded Arizona State (3:00 p.m. MT, ESPN+)
