Buffs In Ninth At Tightly Packed Silverado

April 07, 2025 | Women's Golf

NAPA, Calif.Colorado women's golf is in ninth place after the first round of 2025 Chevron Silverado Showdown.

The Buffaloes, tournament co-hosts along with Oregon, finished Monday's first round at the Silverado Resort & Spa South Course at 10-over-par, 298, well within reach of the top of the leaderboard. Colorado is just seven strokes out of the top five and 11 out of the top spot with 36 holes still to play over the next two days in a field that features eight top 50 teams.

No. 10 Northwestern and CSU Fullerton are tied for the lead at 1-under, 287, and the only two teams in the red during the first round. No. 7 Southern California is third at 2-over, 290 while No. 36 California and No. 37 Iowa State are tied for fourth at 3-over.

Colorado put itself in striking distance of the leaderboard thanks to a strong finish after a rocky start. The Buffaloes found themselves 14-over before getting through the front nine. Colorado had just one birdie combined over the first eight holes and a handful at bogey or worse.

The Buffaloes ended the front on a high note with three birdies on the 462-yard par-4 ninth and it proved to be a sign of things to come.  Two more birdies followed on the 347-yard par-4 10th. Colorado experienced one last hiccup at the 11th, playing the longest hole on the course, 544-yard par-5, at 3-over.

That was it however as the Buffaloes played the final six holes at 4-under (3-under toward the team score) – four birdies and not a single hole over par. The performance momentarily vaulted Colorado into the eighth spot only to be leap frogged by No. 50 Oregon State which needed birdies on its final two holes at the par-5 ninth to take over eighth place at 9-over.

"We got off to a rough start today, but once we shook the nerves and settled in, it was great to see the team earn three back on the final seven holes," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "We'll be rethinking how we played holes 8 and 11 because we were +9 on those two holes and only +1 on the rest of the golf course. The positive is that there was a lot of good golf played overall by the team."

Junior Morgan Miller, Sophomore Carolyn Fuller and redshirt freshman Vanessa Ngo are tied for 14th overall after each carding and even-par 72. The Buffaloes trio are just two strokes out of second place joining a logjam of 23 golfers between even-par and 2-under.

CSU Fullerton's Kaitlyn Zermeno Smith is the leader after round one following a 6-under, 66 and is four strokes up on the rest of the field.
Miller had the steadiest day for the Buffaloes, logging 14 pars, and canceling out a pair of bogeys with birdies at the ninth and the 390-yard par-4 12th.

As luck would have it, Fuller and Ngo are playing as individuals, so not counting in the team standings, but their competitiveness shined through. They had nearly identical rounds, both recording 12 pars while matching up three birdies against three bogeys.

The duo also got to even by making birdies on their final hole of the day. Fuller nabbed the birdie on the ninth to record her team-leading fifth round of even par this season. Ngo birdied the 18th to claim her season's first even-par round.

Freshman Sydney Givens continued her fantastic first year run with a 74 and is tied for 30th after the first round, but with the logjam above her only four strokes out of second place. She was 3-over through her first four holes but played 1-under the rest of the way, including back-to-back birdies at the ninth and 10th.

Sophomore Francesca Sumcad, fresh off her win at the Southern Colorado Open March 24, is tied for 38th after a 3-over 75 in the first round. Playing in her first "team scoring" round since September, she was 3-over on the front but played the back at even, logging her lone birdie of the day on the par-4 14th. She finished off her round with four straight pars.

Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch and freshman Ellen O'Shaughnessy are tied for 54th at 5-over after both shooting 77 on Monday. Both were 5-over on the front alone, before settling in to shoot the back at even.

"We talked to the team about having patience with this course the next two days," Sheils said. "Pars are our friends out here. I'm looking forward to moving day tomorrow."

Colorado will pair with No. 16 Arizona, Boise State and Long Beach State in Tuesday's second round beginning at 9:42 a.m. MT off the No. 10 tee.
