Colorado soccer builds towards Opening Day

BOULDER – Colorado Soccer marked the start of the 2025 season, holding its first official practice of the fall under the overcast skies at Prentup Field on Tuesday morning.

The morning session was the first of two practices scheduled for Tuesday. The Buffs will hold two-a-days for the rest of the week, before taking a break on Friday.

"It was a great start today," head coach Danny Sanchez noted after the morning. I thought we did really well in our fitness evaluation. I was really pleased with what I saw from the majority of the group, not only from the performance, but also the mentality and really pushing through things. [I] Really love the spirit of that. It's a good start. It's day one, but it's a good place to start."

The Buffs wasted little time getting down to business, going up and down the field at full speed 11-on-11 for the majority of practice.

"We saw some really good things," Sanchez added. "Good movement. Good decision-making, and there were some really good performances.

"We have a The first chance to catch the Buffaloes in action will game in eight days and a real game in 13 days," Sanchez continued. "We don't have a lot of time. So we have to see what they can do. Get them evaluated. They've been working with [strength & conditioning coach] Skylar [Rubalcaba]. So from that side of it, I think they've taken care of themselves. Now it's just about who we play and where we put them. The only way to learn that is just to play."
Colorado, which advanced to its 14th NCAA Tournament in 2024, boasts 11 new faces at the onset of 2025. The mix of six transfers and five freshmen makes up almost half of the new roster. Jordan Whiteaker (TCU), Riley MacDonald (LSU), Caley Swierenga (LSU), Lexi Meyer (Alabama) and Reagan Kotschau (Washington State) all arrived in the spring semester and were able to get acclimated to the program.

Graduate transfer Kenzi Gillispie (Kansas State) joined freshmen Chloe Zipprich, Ruby Hayward, Vivi Zacarias, Maddie Sharrer, Sophia Zboyan and Lilian Zamorano on the Prentup Field pitch for the first time on Tuesday.

"For the first day, I thought they played with a lot of confidence," Sanchez said of the freshman group. "It's tough to jump into a situation. They've been working out with the team for a few weeks, but to really have the first time with the coaching staff, they're in play. I thought they played with confidence, playing to their strengths. We'll coach them up and tactically explain what we're looking for. Day one, we just wanted to throw them out there and see what they could do, and we're really pleased with what we saw from the freshman."

The first chance to catch the Buffaloes in action will be on Aug. 7, when they take on Colorado College (7 p.m.) in exhibition play. Seven days later, Colorado will get the regular season underway at home against Michigan State.
