Phillips Excited About WR Depth

August 18, 2025 | Football

BOULDER -- As the Colorado receiver group prepares for the upcoming season, Coach Jason Phillips is optimistic about the development of his unit.

With a blend of fresh faces and returning players, the emphasis is on youth, maturity, and meeting expectations.

Young players like Omarion Miller, Dre'lon Miller, and Joseph Williams are being counted on to contribute immediately.

Phillips knows that the group has a lot of work to do, but he's excited about what's to come.

The Young Guns

One of the primary themes in Phillips' assessment is the youth and inexperience of the receiver group.

With a number of new players joining the roster, there is a learning curve to navigate. These young talents must quickly grasp the expectations and standards of the program.

Phillips, however, is encouraged by their progress. He notes that they are beginning to understand what it means to be a part of the team and the level of performance required.

The Rotation Game

With a receiver room that Phillips is comfortable with, the focus shifts to maintaining health and productivity throughout the season.

Phillips envisions a rotation of 8 to 11 players who can contribute effectively. The goal is not necessarily to replace Travis Hunter, LaJohntay Wester, Will Sheppard or Jimmy Horn Jr., but to replicate and potentially exceed their production. This strategy allows for a balanced workload and keeps players fresh for the challenges ahead.

Freshmen are not Underclassmen

In the Colorado program, freshmen aren't treated as underclassmen. The expectation is for them to make an immediate impact. Phillips and the coaching staff recruit with the intent of having these young players contribute right away.

It's about understanding the maturity level required to meet the program's expectations. Phillips has seen significant growth in young players like Quentin Gibson and Quannell Farrakhan Jr., and he believes they will be ready to make plays when the time is right.

The philosophy of the Colorado receiver group under Coach Jason Phillips is clear: it's all about embracing youth, setting high expectations, and striving for consistency. With a mix of young talent and experienced players, the goal is to not only meet but exceed the production of previous seasons. As the season unfolds, Phillips will continue to develop and nurture this group, ensuring they are ready to make an impact on the field.
