Bubalo and Alexin find a second day of success in California
BERKELEY – Two Colorado Buffaloes continued their way through the singles consolation bracket in day two of competition at the Battle in the Bay Classic at the California Tennis Club.
Ema Bubalo and Lera Alexin both climbed their way to the consolation quarterfinals after two straight-set victories, despite their loss in doubles competition this afternoon.
Early in the day, Bubalo and Alexin began on court three facing Lucia Peyre and Rose Marie Nijkamp of Oklahoma State. The duo fell short of the win in the end, falling 8-3, finishing their run of doubles play.
Starting the night off, Bubalo began her singles play on the back side bracket facing Sac State's Lou Baudouin. The Buff kept a solid lead throughout the match, taking the first set over Baudouin 6-4. Coming down to a tiebreaker in the second set, 7-6, Bubalo took a five-point lead to secure the tiebreaker, 7-2.
Following Bubalo, Alexin kept the night alive with her defeat over Sac State's Irene Riva. Alexin came back from a 3-5 trail behind Riva to secure a 6-5 game going into tiebreaker. When the points came down to 40-40, Alexin took charge giving herself the 7-5 set win.
From there it was solid play, as Alexin took two four-point streaks in the second set, keeping her lead until eventually taking the set, 6-3.
