The Buffs go scoreless vs the Badgers
MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin edged Colorado 1-0 on Sunday at the Dan McClimon Memorial Track/Soccer Complex, handing the Buffaloes their first loss of the season.
Sunday, the Buffs' first road game of the season, also marked the first game this season in which Colorado was held off the scoreboard. The lone goal of the match came late in the second half, securing a narrow victory for the Badgers.
"Tough on today for the Buff going against a very good team," head coach Danny Sanchez expressed after the loss. "I thought we competed for the most part throughout the match. We lost our way a little bit in the second half, but I was pleased with how we responded after we gave up the goal. It just wasn't enough."
The Buffaloes (5-1-1) managed five shots on goal but were unable to convert, while Wisconsin's goalkeeper, Drew Stover, recorded five saves in the shutout.
Colorado goalkeeper Jordan Nytes recorded five saves, facing 11 shots on goal.
"Jordi was fantastic today," Sanchez added about the CU keeper. "The two saves she made [before the goal], but just got unlucky on the rebounds. The first save was world-class, and she made another great save on a breakaway when we got stretched at the end and were throwing numbers forward. She gave us a chance to win. She did her job."
CU's offensive attack was led by Emerson Layne and her two shots, one of which was on target. Hope Leyba managed two shots, both of which were on goal. Jace Holley attempted two shots, with one reaching the goalkeeper.
Wisconsin moves to 6-1-0 on the season.
How it Happened
The first half saw a strong defensive performance as neither side could find the back of the net. Nytes made an early save in the 2nd minute, setting the tone for a solid defensive effort. Layne and Holley both attempted to break through the Badgers' defense, but despite their efforts and four CU corner kicks, the half ended with a scoreless tie.
Play resumed in the second half with Nytes keeping the Buffs in the match. She recorded a crucial save 20 seconds into the half, stopping a shot by Wisconsin's Brooke Allen.
Despite the Buffs' continued offensive effort, including a chance from Holley in the 57th minute, Wisconsin managed to break the deadlock in the 73rd minute, Adee Boer pouncing on a rebound off a Nytes save for the goal.
Colorado continued to apply pressure, with Leyba attempting to equalize in the 80th minute, but the effort was denied by Wisconsin's goalkeeper Drew Stover, preserving the shutout.
