Colorado gets back at it on Wednesday

BOULDER – No. 14 Colorado lacrosse will look to keep its perfect home record intact when it closes out the non-conference season against UConn at Kittredge Field on Wednesday.

The Buffaloes improved to 5-2 on the season and 3-0 at home with an emphatic 18-3 win over Stetson on Sunday. CU's 18 goals scored were the most this season, and it was the team's largest margin of victory since defeating Cincinnati by a 15-score margin in last season's regular-season finale (20-5).

Colorado opened the game with a 10-0 run, matching the team's longest goal streak of the season. By halftime, the tone was set, and the Buffs were in cruise control the rest of the afternoon.

"I think to come out and dictate the pace of play was important on our end," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden explained after Sunday's win. "I think our offense did a good job of executing for the most part. Again, there are areas we could do better. We still want to do better in transition, but just in terms of taking control of the pace of play, that's really big for us as we look to our next games down this stretch."

Despite the lopsided win, Colorado would like to fine-tune a few things before the Buffs get into Big 12 play next week.

"I think UConn is a really good team and is going to present us a challenge in a lot of different ways," Whidden commented. "I think for us, the draws are huge. We have to find a way to have more possession and be clean in transition. I know we had the first one [clear attempt] we turned over in the game. But it's just about controlling the things we can control to give ourselves the most opportunities we can have."

The lopsided win improved Colorado's scoring margin, which now sits 16th in the nation at 5.00, and the Buffs continued their impressive run of not allowing an opponent to score in double figures through the first seven games this season. Colorado ranks third in the NCAA in scoring defense, holding teams to 6.43 goals per game.

Maybe most importantly, the Buffs should be fairly well rested going into Wednesday's meeting against UConn. All of CU's available players got into the contest on Sunday, allowing for some of the team's top contributors to rest late in the game. Colorado had a trio of first-time goal scorers: Haylie Abrams, Addison Brower, and Natalie Myslinski.

"Our whole team works so hard in and out of practice every day," senior Molly Reed said after a hat trick performance of her own on Sunday. "The fact that everyone was able to get those opportunities today was just exciting to see."

UConn (3-4) makes its first trip to Boulder for the inaugural meeting between the two schools. The Huskies have won two of their last three games, with the loss coming to a top-10-ranked team in Yale. Sophomore attacker Megan O'Brien leads the Huskies with 16 goals and 28 points.
