Buffs Open In Ninth At NCAA Waco Regional

May 11, 2026 | Women's Golf

Maya McVey Shots 70, Four Off The Lead

WACO, Texas — Colorado women's golf is in ninth place after the first round of the NCAA Waco Regional, played Monday at the Ridgewood Country Club.

The Buffaloes, who entered as the ninth seed in the regional, shot 12-over-par, 292, well within reach of the coveted top five needed to advance to the NCAA Finals. Tulsa currently sits in the fifth spot at 6-over after Monday's first round.

"I think it was a really good day for the Buffs," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "I know our place on the scoreboard doesn't necessarily indicate that, but it was a day where I thought we played better than we scored. They managed their way around the golf course beautifully and were just composed, competing hard all day."

Scoring was certainly at a premium on the par-70 Ridgewood course that played at 6,097 yards and featured only two par 5s. SMU was the only team to score in the red and is the round one leader at 3-under. Top-seeded and No. 4-ranked Texas A&M and No. 8 Oregon are at even par. SEC champion Tennessee is in fourth at 2-over.

"It's a hard course to score on (and the) two par 5s today played incredibly long, so just not the same amount of scoring opportunities as we typically see," Sheils said. "But with a few less bogeys and taking advantage of a few more wedge shots when we do have that in hand tomorrow, I think we'll be in a good position."

Junior Maya McVey led the Buffaloes with a solid round of even-par 70. She is tied for ninth individually, only four shots off the lead.

As the score would indicate, McVey had the team's most 'even' round of the day, making par on 15 of 18 holes. She started her day with five straight pars before her lone hiccup, with a double-bogey on the 385-yard, par-4 sixth.

McVey was mistake-free the rest of the way. After holding at 2-over through the front, she picked up a birdie at the 519-yard par-5 10th. McVey shot par on the next five holes before getting back to even with another birdie on the short 114-yard par-3 16th before heading into the clubhouse with her 70.

"She is in control of every part of her game right now," Sheils said. "She's just such a great player who has been such an asset for us this year. It's fun to see her playing well right now."

Freshman Teemapat Pateetin is tied for 29th at 3-over following a 73 in the first round. Like McVey, Pateetin made par on 15 of 18 holes, including nine straight to begin her round. She wasn't able to make any birdies on the day, however, and fell to 3-over on the back.

Sophomore Ellen O'Shaughnessy is tied for 41st at 4-over with a 74 on Monday. She was 3-over on the front and 5-over through 14 before collecting one of Colorado's two birdies at the 370-yard, par-4 15th. Junior Carolyn Fuller had the other birdie on the day at the 15th and is tied for 44th, one shot behind O'Shaughnessy at 5-over.

Freshman Ananthi Vivek is tied for 56th after carding a 78.

Vanessa Borovilos of Texas A&M, Kiara Romero of Oregon, and Kyra Van Kan of Tennessee hold a share of the first-round lead at 4-under, three of only eight golfers who shot sub-par rounds on Monday.

Colorado will pair with Baylor, currently in seventh at 8-over, and Tarleton State, in eighth at 10-over, for Tuesday's second round, with those groupings starting off the front at 7:50 a.m. MT.

NOTES: The Waco Regional at Ridgewood marks just the third time Colorado has played a tournament on a par 70 course. The previous two, in 2008 and 2011, were both in Gainesville, Fla., at the University of Florida's golf course … McVey's 70 ties for the fifth-best round by a Colorado golfer at an NCAA regional … Colorado's 63 pars as a team on Monday was the second-best in the field, trailing only first-round leader SMU, which had 65 … McVey and Pateetin tied for second individually in that same category with 15 each.
