Buffs Drop To 10th At Waco Regional
May 12, 2026 | Women's Golf
WACO, Texas — Colorado women's golf slipped one spot into 10th place following the second round of the NCAA Waco Regional, Tuesday at the Ridgewood Country Club.
Colorado, the ninth-seed in the event, is 23-over-par through 36 holes on the par-70 Ridgewood course after an 11-over round on Tuesday. The Buffaloes were one stroke better than Monday's first round, but the rest of the field went significantly lower on the day, preventing Colorado from making a move up in the standings.
Five teams shot in the red, including No. 42-ranked TCU, which was the team that passed the Buffaloes on the leaderboard, as the Horned Frogs moved up two spots into eighth after a 4-under round.
No. 21 SMU widened its overall lead, shooting 11-under. The Mustangs are at 14-under for the regional, eight strokes better than top seed and No. 4-ranked Texas A&M at 6-under. No. 36 LSU is in third at 1-under after a fantastic 8-under round, while No. 4 Oregon is in fourth at 3-over.
Host and No. 26-ranked Baylor and No. 49 Tulsa head into Wednesday's final round tied for fifth at 6-over, putting Colorado 17 shots off the pace to make the cut with 18 holes remaining. The top five teams at the Waco Regional advance to the NCAA Finals, May 22-27, at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif.
"We're disappointed with the result today," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "It certainly wasn't for lack of effort because the team competed hard, but we didn't quite trust ourselves enough in some key moments. At this stage in the season, when you swing and putt tentatively, it shows up on the scoreboard. We still have another round tomorrow, and our focus is to play freely and finish the week in a way that reflects who we are."
Junior Carolyn Fuller had Colorado's best round on Tuesday, shooting a 1-under 69, and in the process, jumped up 13 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 31st overall at 4-over.
Playing even through four, Fuller got to 2-under after back-to-back birdies at the par-3 fifth and par-4 sixth. She was 1-under through nine before climbing to 3-under following another set of back-to-back birdies at the par-5 10th and par-4 11th. Fuller stayed at 3-under through 14, before settling for double-bogey at the par-4 15th, to drop back to 1-under. She made par on her final three holes to secure her seventh round in the 60s on the season.
"That was a really nice round of golf by Carolyn," Sheils said. "She demonstrated beautiful ball striking, hitting 17 of 18 greens (in regulation)."
Junior Maya McVey joins Fuller, along with seven others, at 4-over after carding a 74 in the second round. Freshman Teemapat Pateetin is tied for 45th at 8-over following a round of 75 on Tuesday.
Freshman Ananthi Vivek had Colorado's second-best round of the day with a 73, making par on 15 of 18 holes. She is in 53rd place overall at 11-over.
Sophomore Ellen O'Shaughnessy is tied for 56th at 15-over, following an 81 on Tuesday.
Vanessa Borovilos of Texas A&M, Francesca Fiorellini of LSU and Kirra St. Laurent of SMU hold a share of the second-round lead at 5-under. St. Laurent vaulted 11 spots to take a share of the lead after a day's best score of 6-under, 64. Borovilos maintained a share of the lead after shooting a 69 on Tuesday.
Colorado will pair with Prairie View A&M and Northern Arizona in Wednesday's final round, with those groupings starting off the No. 10 tee at 7:50 a.m. MDT.
NOTES: Carolyn Fuller's 69 ties for the third-best round by a Colorado Buffalo at an NCAA Regional event and is the fifth to shoot a round in the 60s … Fuller tied a school season record with her seventh round in the 60s, matching former teammate Morgan Miller who initially set the mark in 2023-24, Fuller's freshman season … Fuller's 69 is the second-best 18-hole score on a par 70 in the program's limited history with par 70 courses (only the third tournament) … Northern Arizona was disqualified from the team competition midway through the second round after one of their players was forced to withdraw due to an injury. The Lumberjacks only had four players to begin with, and with the injury news on Tuesday were unable to complete team competition. NAU's three remaining golfers will pair with CU and Prairie View A&M's top three seeds in Wednesday's final round.
