Buffs Defeat Wisconsin to Conclude Milwaukee Tennis Classic

GLENDALE, Wis. – To close out the 50th anniversary of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, the Colorado Buffaloes tennis team dominated on the final day, earning a pair of victories over Wisconsin to cap the three-day tournament.
Colorado picked up wins in both doubles and singles action, with returning Buffs Lera Alexin and Ema Bubalo teaming for a 6-2 doubles victory over the Badger's Karolina Jacobson, a Colorado native, and Gabriela Skrabalova.
Of the four Buffs who made the trip to the Badger State, Louise Ternstroem, CU's first-year player making her CU debut, was the sole CU player to compete in singles play on Sunday. She battled to a three-set win over Jacobson.
"I thought our group made some good progress this weekend," CU head coach Anthony Pham said. "We played a ton of matches, competed well, and are showing strong maturity in how we handle adversity"
HOW IT HAPPENED
After totaling six doubles matches and 15 singles matches played the previous two days, a much lighter day for the Buffs opened Sunday at 9 a.m.
Alexin and Bubalo struck first against Jacobson and Skrabalova, taking the opening game of the match. WU leveled the score 1-1 before the Buffs' duo took three straight games. Trailing 4-1, the Badgers cut the deficit to 4-2, but the Buffaloes responded by taking the final two games to secure the 6-2 victory.
With doubles play ending in Colorado's favor, Ternstroem carried the momentum into singles, taking the opening set 6-3. Jacobson answered with a 7-6 win in the second set to even the match before Ternstroem prevailed in the deciding tiebreaker to secure the victory.
UP NEXT
Colorado will return home to practice this week in preparation for the Bedford Cup, Sept. 25-27 at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
"We are excited to get back to practice, to prepare for the Bedford Cup in a couple of weeks," Pham said.
