Ikedo, Gretsch Close Weekend Play With Pair Of Wins

COLORADO SPRINGS - The Colorado Buffaloes tennis team closed out the final day of Bedford Cup competition with a pair of victories, picking up wins in both singles and doubles play on Sunday at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Doubles team Willow Gretsch and Yukiko Ikedo picked up a dominant win to bookend their weekend. Â After a win on Friday and coming up short on Saturday, the Buffs bounced back Sunday defeating an Air Force duo 6-3.
"They trusted their preparation as it showed," CU Assistant Coach Erick Garcia said. "It showed from match to match with better timing and decision making."
Ikedo continued momentum into singles play. After recording a win due to opponent withdrawal, she looked to face in-state rival Colorado State for the Buffs final match of the weekend, bringing home the win by a narrow 7-5 margin in both sets.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a mixed outing Saturday, the Buffs opened doubles play at 9 a.m. Sunday. Traveling to southern Colorado for the weekend, the duo carried a dominant 6-2 win Friday into the final day of the three-day tournament.
With persistent serves, the Buffs earned their first break at 4-3 against Air Force's Tia Chrostopulos and Sofi Garcia, not losing another game to take the set, 6-3, ending weekend doubles play 2-1.
Ikedo was scheduled to meet Appalachian State's Allegra Hodson for the second time this weekend, before the Mountaineer forfeited the match due to injury, giving the Buffs a quick win.
Having secured wins in both doubles and singles play already Sunday, the second-year Buff met Colorado State's Annika Planinsek for a competitive two sets. With each going 7-5 in Colorado's favor, Ikedo tallied an additional Colorado win to conclude the Buffs Bedford Cup slate.Â
UP NEXT
The two Buffs players will return to Boulder to prepare for upcoming competition. Colorado will travel to San Francisco, Calif., Oct. 1-3, for the Battle of the Bay Classic.
"This weekend is going to help us go back home and work on more specifics in order to prepare well," Garcia said.
