Senior (2019): Tompkins backed Colorado to a 12-8-2 overall record and CU’s third trip to the NCAA Tournament in four years…Tompkins helped the Buffs get as high as No. 17 in the nation….She finished the season with a .789 save percentage and made a career-high 101 saves with eight solo shutouts in her first season ss a full-time starter…ranked fifth in the NCAA with 2,047 minutes played….completed the season with 1.19 goals-against average….rounded out her career at Colorado as the program’s all-time leader in wins (49), saves (369) and save percentage (.841)…also finished atop CU’s list for most games as a goalie (85) and starting the most games in net (82)… ranks second in CU history with a .90 goals-against average…her 4.34 saves per game ranks her third…named to the inaugural Pac-12 Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll…was also selected First-Team United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-West Region with her cumulative 3.79 GPA…was a Second-Team All-Pacific Region honoree and a Second-Team All-Pac-12 selection…was awarded Co-Team MVP honors as well as Defensive MVP.
JUNIOR (2018): Tompkins helped Colorado finish 22nd in the NCAA with a .850 save percentage. Individually, she ranked second in the Pac-12 and 23rd in the nation with a .851 save percentage. She averaged 4.53 saves per game (3rd Pac-12) with a .979 goals against average. Tompkins registered 12 wins on the season, including a solo shutout against California. She had a hand in seven of CU’s eight shutouts on the season. Tompkins started 18 of the 19 matches she appeared in. She extended her Pac-12 shutout streak to 595:00 over seven games (carry over from 2017), allowing a goal at the 51:55 mark at Arizona State. Offensively, Tompkins recorded her second career assist in CU’s 6-0 win at Oregon State. She closed the season with 86 total saves, allowing 15 goals. She tied a career-high with a 12 save effort in CU’s draw at Arizona State. Tompkins earned her sixth Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week award after wins over Utah Valley and Denver. She is now tied atop CU’s all-time wins list with 37. She maintains her position as Colorado’s career leader in save percentage (.862) and goals against average (.79).
SOPHOMORE (2017): Selected as a team captain, Tompkins put together the best season in CU history for a goalkeeper, leading the Buffs to the second round of the NCAA Tournament as they broke school records for shutouts (14) and goals-against average (0.61). She was named third-team All-Pac-12 and United Soccer Coaches third-team All-West Region. Individually, Tompkins broke the records for GAA (0.58) and save percentage (.882), and had a 10-6-3 record, while starting all 22 matches. She played 1,701 minutes in goal and had nine solo shutouts in addition to five combined shutouts, making 82 saves and allowing just 11 scores. Tompkins also recorded her first career assist. She finished the year first in the Pac-12 in save percentage, third in GAA and total saves, fifth in saves per game (3.73) and shutouts, and seventh in minutes played. Nationally, she was 11th in save percentage, 18th in GAA, 29th in shutouts, 100th in saves and 113th in minutes played. Tompkins opened the season by leading CU to a school-record six consecutive clean sheets as she broke the record for longest shutout streak at 454 minutes and 57 seconds, dating back to 2016’s final match. She earned her first solo shutout of the year in a 1-0 victory over TCU on Aug. 25. She also blanked CSUN in a scoreless draw on Sept. 2, making two saves, and shut out BYU on Sept. 4 with four saves. Tompkins made seven stops in a 2-0 loss to No. 1 UCLA on Sept. 22, then led the Buffs to back-to-back shutouts on the road at Washington State (five saves) and Washington (four) the following weekend. She played the first 45 minutes of a 3-0 win over Arizona State and stopped four shots on Oct. 19, then held Arizona without a goal, while making a season-high 11 saves on Oct. 22. Tompkins finished the regular season with four consecutive solo clean sheets against Arizona, Oregon State (three saves), Oregon (six) and Utah (five). She recorded her first career assist in the 12th minute at Utah in a 2-0 victory on Nov. 3, sending her free kick from CU’s end to the top of the box, where Camilla Shymka headed the ball to Megan Massey, who scored on her first touch. She broke her own school record for consecutive shutout minutes set earlier in the season, reaching 498 minutes and five seconds before surrendering a goal in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, a 2-1 win over Denver. She was selected as the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week on Oct. 24, Oct. 31 and Nov. 7, becoming the first player in Pac-12 history to earn a player of the week award three consecutive weeks. Tompkins finished the season with seven saves at No. 2 North Carolina in the second round of the postseason on Nov. 17. Tompkins went on to earn Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention with a 3.67 GPA.
REDSHIRT FRESHMAN (2016): Tompkins led Colorado to one of the best seasons in school history, reaching the NCAA Tournament and finishing second in the Pac-12. She emerged as one of the top goalkeepers in the country as a freshman, earning Pac-12 All-Freshman honors and was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Freshman Best XI second team. For the season, she started 20 of 22 matches, posting a 15-5-1 record, 0.83 goals-against average and .855 save percentage, while making 100 saves and allowing just 17 in 1,846:57. She also had seven solo shutouts and averaged 4.55 saves per game. She broke every freshman CU record, including saves, save percentage, GAA, wins and shutouts. Tompkins ranked 25th in the nation in save percentage, 32nd in saves, 49th in GAA and 58th in shutouts, while sitting first in the Pac-12 in saves per game, second in total saves, third in save percentage, fourth in shutouts and fifth in GAA. Her save percentage was also fifth-best among freshmen in the country. In the CU record books, she tied the single-season record for wins and was second in save percentage and fifth in saves, saves per game and GAA. Tompkins emerged as the starting goalkeeper after splitting time with Scout Watson over the first three matches, making 12 saves in an overtime loss at Missouri on Aug. 28, the most saves ever for a CU freshman and most for any CU goalkeeper since 2008. She recorded her first career shutout with one save in a 5-0 victory against Drexel on Sept. 4. She then had four consecutive shutouts and broke the school record for consecutive shutout minutes, reaching 480:43 from Sept. 17 to Oct. 2 with clean sheets against Denver (six saves), Washington State, Arizona (three saves) and Arizona State (six saves). Her shutout to open Pac-12 play at WSU on Sept. 23 was the 200th win in CU history and the first-ever in Pullman and she made seven saves in the effort. Tompkins blanked Oregon State in a 3-0 victory with two saves on Oct. 9. She led the Buffs to a double-overtime win at No. 10 California with nine saves on Oct. 23 and then a 1-0 victory at home against No. 9 UCLA four days later with four saves. Tompkins started all 11 Pac-12 matches and went 8-2-1 in conference play with a 0.89 GAA and .857 save percentage. She is also an excellent student, earning Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention with a 3.79 cumulative GPA.
FRESHMAN (2015): Redshirted as a true freshman.
HIGH SCHOOL/CLUB: Tompkins was a four-year letterwinner during her high school career, where she helped the Pinnacle Pioneers win the 2014 state championship, holding every opponent scoreless playing goalkeeper through her team’s tournament run. A three-time Pinnacle Outstanding Goalkeeper award winner, Tompkins has also played for Sereno 97 ECNL club team, winning five Arizona State Club Soccer Championships and most recently, in 2013, she contributed to a squad that won the National (U-16) ECNL Club Soccer Championship. Tompkins has participated in various Olympic Development Programs. From 2010-12, she was a member of the ODP Region IV U13-15 squad, played on the US WNT U15 and U-17 for four years and also earned a spot on the ECNL U15-18 squad from 2011-15. She was invited to numerous national and regional ODP training camps from 2010-13. Tompkins also took home several honors during her time with the ODP program, which included the 2012 “Golden Glove – Top Goalkeeper” award in the Puma Women’s Elite Showcase and was named to the ECNL National Showcase All Event First Team and ODP Region IV 97’ All-Tournament First Team. When Tompkins is not on the pitch, she shines academically. The Phoenix, Ariz. native has earned a place on the Superintendent’s Honor-Roll every semester of high school.
IN THE CLASSROOM: Tompkins is majoring in psychology. She has earned Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention as a redshirt freshman and sophomore and has a cumulative GPA of 3.67. She was one of 26 CU student-athletes to achieve a 4.0 GPA for the 2017 calendar year.
PERSONAL: Jalen Justine Tompkins was born on February 14, 1997 in Phoenix, Ariz. and is the daughter of James Tompkins and Kelly Johnson. She has an older brother, Evan, who is a sophomore and plays football at Bemidji State. She enjoys fishing, hiking, rollerblading, watching movies and spending time with friends. When Tompkins was 15 year-old, she traveled to Costa Rica to play soccer and the highlight of her trip was spending time at an orphanage where she met underprivileged children and had the opportunity to connect with them through sports and games. Tompkins chose to attend Colorado because of the strong academics, and the beautiful campus and city of Boulder. She was also impressed with the athletes, coaching staff and athletic department at CU.
