2019-20 (Sophomore): Averaged 3.0 points and just under one rebound, while appearing in all 32 games. Started the first five games of the season - with the Buffaloes winning all five - before coming off the bench for the remainder of the season. Tied for fourth on the team in steals with 17. Led, or shared the team lead, in steals six times including a career-best three against Iona (12/29). Also had 10 points and a matched personal-best four assists against the Gaels. Recorded his season-best in scoring with 11 points against Loyola-Marymount (12/4). Had seven points against Washington State in the Pac-12 Tournament (3/11), his most against a conference foe this season. Following the season, he entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and elected to continue his collegiate career at Northern Colorado.
2018-19 (Freshman): Averaged 5.6 points and 1.3 assists as a first-year Buffalo, playing in all 36 contests. Tied for fourth on the team in total assists with 46. Primarily the first guard off the bench, but did log two starts: in back-to-back home games against Washington State (1/10) and Washington (1/12). Scored a career-high 13 points at Utah (1/20), hitting 6 of 9 from the field. Had six games scoring in double-digits including a 10-point effort against Norfolk State (3/25) in the second round of the NIT, tying a career-best with two 3-point field goals. He upped his scoring average to 8.3 points during Colorado's three NIT games. Had three steals in the Pac-12 Tournament, all three leading to break-away dunks. He led the Buffaloes in steals in five games while also leading the team in assists on for occasions. Made his collegiate debut with nine points and four assists against Drake (11/13).
High School: A 2018 graduate of Denver East High School, Kountz averaged 23.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.5 steals as a senior. He led Colorado’s largest classification in scoring as senior, helping the Angels to a 21-4 record and a spot in the Class 5A Sweet 16. Kountz was an All-Colorado selection by the Denver Post and the USA Today’s Colorado State Player of the Year. He took MVP honors at the Nebraska Prep Classic and the Tarkanian Classic. Named the 2018 Denver Public Schools Player of the Year, Kountz was a two-time all-state selection and earned honorable mention as a sophomore. As a junior, Kountz helped Denver East to an 18-8 record and a spot in the Class 5A Great 8. He averaged 24.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.2 steals in his prep career.
Academics: Was an Open Option major while at Colorado.
Personal: Born Daylen Jwuan Kountz on Feb. 26, 2000, in Kansas City, Kan, making him the first Colorado basketball player born in the 2000s. He is the son of Daryl Kountz and Tameka Robinson Kountz. He has two sisters, Christa and Kandice. Both parents played college basketball, his father at Penn Valley College and his mother at Brown Mackie College. He aspires to be a professional basketball player and chose Colorado over Colorado State, Nebraska, Wichita State and Wyoming as it’s “the best fit for me and close to home.” Lists the biggest moment of his prep career as scoring 42 points against George Washington, one year after transferring from there.
