2022 (Freshman)—Maurer showed promise in what turned out to be a brief freshman season.  He took part in eight races on the season, the eight before participating in the World Junior Championships that were held the same time as the RMISA Championships.  Mauer had an impressive showing to open his career at the U.S. National Championships.  Three of those races counted as collegiate races and he had his best finish of seventh in the 15K classic race.  Not counted as a college race was the 15K freestyle junior race, which Mauer won and that win earned him a nod for the Junior World Championships.  At Utah, he also took 24th in the freestyle sprint race and 19th in the classic sprint race.  The next week at the Montana State Invitational, he finished 21st in the freestyle and 23rd in the classic races.  In three races in Alaska, he was consistent with a 15th-place freestyle and 20th-place classic showing at the UAF Nanook Invitational and an 18th-place freestyle finish at the RMISA Invitational.  He earned his first letter and did qualify for the NCAA Championships, although he did not participate for the Buffs there.  He also earned the team’s Laura Sharpe Flood Award at the conclusion fo the season.

Prior To CU—Maurer skied for the Alaska Winter Stars for six years and competed for Service High School for four years, where he was the school’s Most Valuable Skier in 2019, ‘20 and ‘21.  He was the Alaska Region IV Champion and Skimeister in 2020 and ‘21 and won the state championship in 2020 and was the runner-up in 2021.  His coaches were Jan Buron, Greta Anderson and Seiji Takagi.  For the AWS, his top results included winning the U18 Besh Cup in 2018, taking seventh in the 10K freestyle race and second in the relay at the 2019 Junior National Championships and taking third in U18 and the 10th junior overall in the 10K classic race at the U.S. National Championships in 2020.  He was in the top five for U18 at the Scandinavian Cup in 2020, was 16th in the freestyle spring race there while taking second in the 10K classic and was fifth of U18’s in the 5K freestyle race at the Junior National Championships in 2020.  In 2021, he was the top U20 and ninth overall in the Besh Cup 10K classic race and second among U20 and sixth overall in the freestyle race at the Aleyska Hill Climb.  He was a member of the U.S. National Training Group in both 2020 and 2021 and was the AWS Skier of the Year both seasons.

High School—Maurer graduated from Service High School in 2021.  On top of being the school’s Most Valuable Skier his sophomore, junior and senior seasons, he was the state championship in 2020 and was the runner-up in 2021.  He also ran cross country at Service and was the state champion in 2020.
