US SOCCER (2006): On three occasions this spring and summer, Griffin was called up to train with the United States U-21 National Team, the result of which was a spot on the 2006 Nordic Cup squad, the first such assignment for any Buff in program history. She netted her first international goal in the U.S. opener of the Nordic Cup vs. Denmark on July 16, a 3-0 U.S. victory.
JUNIOR (2005): Griffin had the most prolific season of any Buffalo in history in 2005, scoring a school record 12 goals and adding an assist for another record 25 points. She also set a single season record with 84 shots, getting 44 of those on goal for a .524 percentage. She tied for game winners with Allison Kidd (3) and had three two-goal games. She scored the quickest goal in school history vs. Wyoming, her first of the season, coming in 1:39. Griffin netted her second goal of the year against Detroit, then got her game rolling two weeks later with two against Iowa State. She scored the game-winning goal against then-undefeated Oklahoma State on Fox Sports Net, then a week later netted goals in back-to-back games vs. Missouri and Northern Colorado. Griffin caught fire towards the end of the season, with two goals at Texas Tech, a goal and an assist vs. Oklahoma at the Big 12 Tournament, followed by another pair of goals vs. Texas in the semifinals, a 3-2 CU win. She earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team for her work. She then put in 107 minutes in CU’s shootout victory over UC Riverside with three shots on goal. She averaged 1.04 points per game on the season on 3.50 shots per game.
SOPHOMORE (2004): After leading the team in goals and points as a freshman, she was the most productive of the sophomore class with five scores on 48 shots and five assists. She was second on the team in game winning scores (3), with back-to-back winning goals against Utah to claim the Wake Forest/adidas Classic title and LSU a week later. Her third was against Northern Colorado where she became CU’s all-time leader in career multiple goal game leader with two scores, the third such match of her career. At the Big 12 Tournament she took a team-leading five shots and had two a week later against Utah and Portland in the first and second rounds of the NCAA Championships.
FRESHMAN (2003): A midfielder by trade, she made the transition to forward look effortless as CU’s second straight Big 12 Rookie of the Year set a CU single season goals scored record with 10 on the season, and a program best 23 points. She bettered teammate Fran Munnelly’s freshman class goals and points mark. She had a pair of two goal-four point games on the season, against Georgia and Iowa State, both in Boulder. Her five game-winners at the expense of Georgia, Wyoming, Iowa State, Texas and Texas Tech also set a new single season record.
HIGH SCHOOL: Griffin earned a pair of varsity letters her freshman and junior seasons while playing for Desert Mountain, but sat out her sophomore and senior campaigns. In two seasons she was named all-city, all-region and all-state and the Wolves’ most valuable player. On the club side she played for the Sereno 85 Golden Eagles, the six-time state champions and in August of ’02 defeated then-defending national champion Pleasanton Rage. In October of ?02 the Golden Eagles were the No. 4 ranked club in the nation and were the Region 4 ODP Las Vegas runner-up.
IN THE CLASSROOM: Griffin is a communications major at CU.
PERSONAL: Born Nov. 26, 1984 in Chicago, Katherine Patricia Griffin is the daughter of Robert and Cynthia Griffin of Scottsdale, Ariz. The oldest of four children, her sister Kelley is currently attending college, her brother Robbie will be a freshman in college and her youngest sister, Kristin, will be a high school senior this fall.
