HONORS

2004 Indoor 3,000-Meter All-American

2005 Outdoor 10,000-Meter All-American

2006 OUTLOOK: Bret is the eighth-ranked 10k runner in the US, not college, the whole US. But he won't be satisfied to equal his times of a year ago. He's in the best shape of his life right now. It will be exciting to see his winter and spring races.

2005: Continuing his excellence in the mile, Schoolmeester turned in a personal record setting performance and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:03.80 during the indoor season at the Big 12 Indoors. He also took first place at the Air Force Classic with a time of 4:14.42. Schoolmeester participated in the 3k race, taking first at the Husky Classic with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7:59.42. He continued his domination during the outdoor season while competing in the 3, 5, and 10k races. At the Colorado Invitational he ran in the 3k and 5k races, setting a personal record of 8:23.19 in the 3k for first place, and making the regional qualifying mark with his 14:01.23 finish in the 5k race. At the Mt. SAC relays in April, his second-place time of 28:33.31 was good enough for a pr, regional qualifier and a USA Track and Field qualifier. He ran the race two more times, once at the Big 12 Championships, finishing second with a time of 29:25.44 and once more at the NCAA Championships, recording a time of 28:49.07 which earned him a fifth-place finish as well as All-American status.

2004: Schoolmeester and teammate Stephen Pifer were quite possibly the country’s best one-two punches in the mile event, for Schoolmeester recorded the team’s third and fourth fastest times, only to be outdone by Pifer with the top two. Schoolmeester’s best jolt came at the Adidas Classic when he placed second in a time of 4:05.07 ? a new personal record and second-best season time in the Big 12. At the Big 12 Championships, he scored points by clocking a 4:05.82 to finish third (behind Pifer’s 4:04.32). In the 3,000 he ran CU’s top time of the year with a 7:57.10 win at Washington’s Last Chance meet; that mark was also a pr and one of the tops in the conference. At the NCAA Championships, he ran an 8:04.84, good for seventh, to earn All-American status. Outdoors, his best 1,500 netted the second-fastest mark for CU in a time of 3:45.27 at the Pepsi Invitational, while he finished fourth at the Big 12 Championships with a 3:50.26. His Pepsi Invite count qualified him for the NCAA regional meet. In the 5k, he clocked a 13:50.24 at the Mt. SAC Relays to finish fourth overall; the mark was a pr and premier time for CU during the outdoor campaign.

2003: Schoolmeester competed in the 800-meter, mile, 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs, as well as the distance medley relay. His indoor mile time of 4:17.93 at the Air Force Classic took first-place honors and was the second best team mark on the season. He also competed in the indoor Big 12 Championships in the 3k run, claiming 26th place with his season-best time of 8:36.89. Outdoors, Schoolmeester owned the second best team mark of 1:54.33 in the 800-m run, taking second place at the CU Twilight meet. In the 1,500-meter race he took part in the Big 12 Championships, as he finished second in the prelims (3:49.88) before finishing fifth in the finals in 3:49.70, his best time of the season.

CROSS COUNTRY: An All-Big 12, All-NCAA Mountain Region as a sophomore, junior and senior, Schoolmeester added All-American to his resume with a fifth-place finish in 2004, a remarkable 237-pace improvement from his ?03 race. He also earned All-American honors in ’05 with a 37th-place finish. Schoolmeester started out the 2005 season strong, crossing the tape first at the Rocky Mountain Shootout. As one of the team’s best runners, he ran in all three postseason races, finishing sixth (Big 12), second (NCAA Mountain Region) and the NCAAs. Schoolmeester finished just five-tenths of a second behind teammate Billy Nelson at the NCAA Mountain Regional.

HIGH SCHOOL: On the track, Schoolmeester was an all-league and all-state performer his sophomore through senior seasons. He graduated from Denver Christian with prep records in the 800-meter (1:55), 1,600-meter (4:12) and the 3,200-meter (8:49). He was also a member of the Crusaders team that won back-to-back state cross-country titles his sophomore and junior seasons. He was a four-time all-league performer in cross-country and twice named all-state. He had a seventh place finish at the FootLocker Midwest Regional following his senior campaign.

ACADEMICS: Schoolmeester, a Spanish for professions major, carries a better than 3.0 grade point average and was named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll following the 2003, ’04 and ?05 fall and the spring ’05 semesters and was a 2004 second team Academic All-Big 12 selection.

PERSONAL: Bret Everett Schoolmeester was born May 12, 1984 in Orange County, Calif. He is the son of Dale Schoolmeester, an NAIA Track All-American at Northwestern (Iowa) College and Bret’s high school coach of Boulder and Myra Schoolmeester of Sedalia. His older brother Jordan is a firefighter and his younger sister, Allison, recently graduated from Denver Christian.  He is an avid horseman and he and his father run a boarding stable outside of Boulder. He married former CU cross country and steeplechaser Kendall Grgas-Wheeler in June.
