The University of Colorado volleyball team (9-4, 2-0 Big 12) beat No.17 Texas A&M (9-2, 1-1 Big 12) 23-30, 30-22, 30-28, 28-30, 15-11 Saturday night here at the Coors Events/Conference Center to get their second Big 12 Victory and their third over the Aggies in the last five meetings in their first five-game match of the season.
"We came through and showed a little character tonight," Colorado head coach Pi'i aiu said. "Elizabeth Gower and Monique Gerlach really demonstrated a lot of leadership. The more we can play like that when games are on the line and the score is 24-24 or 11-11, the better off we're going to be, and that's what we're aiming for."
Junior middle blocker Monique Gerlach exploded on offense with a team-high 19 kills in the match. She has led Colorado in the kills category in six of the Buff's 13 matches this year and has tallied double figures in nine. Senior left side Sara Fredrickson had a career night for Colorado, pocketing 15 kills to hit .239 on the night while senior left side Kim Taskey also racked up double figures on offense with 11 kills for CU.
Sophomore setter/defensive specialist Allison Barnes had a night for the Buffs, registering a career-high four service aces, adding 10 digs on the night. Barnes served match point for the Buffs, while she also served 12-straight points for Colorado in game three. Also in the fight was freshman middle blocker Allie Griffin, who had her best performance of her young career, seeing intense action against the Aggies and coming up with seven kills on 15 attacks, hitting .333 with two block assists on the night.
The Aggies hit .267 on the night as they were paced by Melissa Munsch who took home a match-high 25 kills and 17 digs, and Laura Jones, who tallied 20 kills in the match. Colorado hit .214 as a team, while they out-blocked Texas A&M 12-6.
Colorado remains at home for the next two contests, hosting Kansas and Missouri on Sept. 25 and 28, respectively. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
