CU-UNC Post Game Quotes

December 13, 2014 | Men's Basketball

University of Colorado Head Coach Tad Boyle

General

"Good win for the Buffs. Sure is nice when you make some shots and get your offense rolling like we did in the second half. It makes everything else look pretty easy. I told our team after the game, this is the time of year, whether you win or lose, we have to learn; we have to grow; we have to get better. That's the experience we had. Tonight, I think we can learn from the positive things offensively when we share the ball, move the ball. It's the way the game should be played. Defensively in the first half, I wasn't very happy. They were 8-for-10 from three (point range). We have to do a better job of guarding the three point line. We talked about that at halftime and did a better job of that in the second half. Overall, I was pleased."

On F Josh Scott, G Askia Booker Responding After Loss VS. CSU

"It was nice. Josh is a good player; we all know that; each player on this team knows that. Josh battles; he rebounds; he defends. I thought he did a great job defensively with four blocks and clogged the middle defensively. I thought Josh was terrific. I thought Askia Booker had great game- 5 assists and 1 turnover, 50% from the field. We'll take that everyday out of Askia. He was really looking to get [F] Wesley [Gordon] involved early, which I thought was a very mature thing to do. It's something we've talked about."

On Swagger Of Team

"I think when our guys play good, they play with a swagger. The thing that is challenging for a Division I basketball player at this level is how do you play when things aren't going well for you. That's where mental toughness comes in. When the shots aren't falling, what kind of energy do you have? When you can't get a call, what kind of energy do you have? Can you overcome adversity? That's the only way to learn how tough you are. I don't if our team's there yet. We'll find out the next time we face adversity. I thought our guys responded after the last two losses with pretty good focus, pretty good energy, and pretty good concentration."

On Efficiency Of Offense

"It's not about who's getting shots. It's is the ball moving and are we attacking the basket. That's what I'm concerned with. I'm not concerned Josh (Scott) having two shots or Wes (Gordon) having zero shots. My guess is, tonight, you could count our bad shots on one hand. I don't think we took a lot of bad shots. That's why we shot the percentage that we did. It's about getting good shots for the team and not about who's getting them."

On Facing Adversity As A Team

"You have learn that mental toughness comes only when you adversity. We all have adversity with our teams and individually. How you react to that and how you handle that tells a lot about you as a person and how tough you are. You can't lose your heart; you can't lose your belief in yourself; you can't lose your confidence."

On Getting A Win After Last Week's Lost

"It was really good and much needed.  Like I said, it was a terrible night (on Wednesday in a loss to Colorado State) for me personally.  It was really not a fun night, and there wasn't much sleep to be had after that game.  So it was good to come out in the fashion that we did and get a win tonight."

On Putting Last Week Behind Him

"Pretty darn determined, I wasn't going to go out and have another bad game.  I'm trying to do a better job of finding people, and sometimes I think it effects how aggressive I am.  Coaches told me I needed to be aggressive in the second half and that's what I did."

On Carrying Success From Game To Game

"I think it's about building upon the success we have and realizing what makes us successful and what doesn't make us successful.  I didn't know this until today, but I guess we had a total of 6 assists for the past two games.  We had 21 in tonight's game and I think that speaks a lot about our offense.  And defensively, during the first half UNC was shooting the ball really well even though some shots were contested.   But in the second half we were able to lower their shooting percentages.  So think it's just realizing what makes us good and capitalizing on consistently doing that."

On Starting The Game Off Well

"I mean my teammates were looking for me more and I tried to stay aggressive.  So ya it felt pretty good to start off well."

On Getting Much Better Ball Movement Tonight

"It's really nice, we are at our best when nobody plays with a personal agenda and everyone plays together. Tonight was a small glimpse of what happens when we play together as a team."

Northern Colorado Head Coach B.J. Hill

On The First Half

"The jump shots were going in. They cover a lot of bad when jump shots go in, they cover a lot of bad when jump shots go in, They cover up a lot of bad. We weren't playing that good. It's just that the shots were bad in the second half."

On The Second Half

"I think we got a little tired because we didn't get a lot of production off of the bench. I was playing some guys some minutes that they don't normally play. They're (CU) good. We were chasing them around offensively. I thought they were really dialed in today which I knew they would be after losing two games in a row that it would become a little bit of a hornets nest. We have to be better defensively than what we were today. That was a little bit of our depth as well. We wore out in the second half. When we subbed, we weren't getting a lot of quality minutes. I'm not talking about points. I'm just talking about intensity, defending, rebounding. We didn't get that. I saw our guys wear out a little bit. They did a great job of pushing the ball in transition. We had troubles stopping them from the get go."

On Coaching Against Tad Boyle Who He Coached Under At UNC

"It wasn't as fun as it appeared a year ago when we signed the contract. It was a good idea but it's hard, it's no fun. But, they're going to be good. I know that they're not happy with how the last couple of weeks went but they're a really good team."

On The Difference In The Game

"Our inability to defend. We had one guy rebounding today. We try to talk about defense and rebounding and communication. The lack of communication really bothers me. We didn't communicate on our ball screen defense, on a lot of things that they do on their offense. If you're not going to talk to each other, it makes things a lot harder. It makes your team inefficient and we were inefficient today."

On Josh Scott's Ability

"Josh [Scott] is a good player. He's not going to have two bad games in a row. He's too good. He's a top 50 player for a reason. He came to play and we knew he would. We knew what we were heading into. We were able to stave it off for 20 minutes and then we wore out."
