Buffs Blank San Francisco 3-0

September 21, 2014 | Soccer

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's soccer team defeated the San Francisco Dons 3-0 at Prentup Field on Sunday afternoon in the Omni Hotels Colorado Soccer Classic, finishing 7-2 in non-conference play.

The Buffaloes started fast to take an early 1-0 lead behind a goal from Kahlia Hogg at the 3:58 mark. Senior Darcy Jerman sent a pass to sophomore Brie Hooks in motion in the center of the box. Hooks controlled the ball with two-touches, found Hogg, who stepped up and sent her shot past USF's diving goalkeeper, Madalyn Schiffel.

"Brie [Hooks] was really unselfish on the top of the box, laid it off, and we identified that they were going to be a little bit weaker out on the width," said Hogg. "I just really concentrated on my strike and it came off well, so really a confidence booster for me."

It was the second straight match that the Buffs scored within the first five minutes of play.

After halftime, Colorado would capitalize two more times with goals from Hooks and junior Emily Paxton before the day was over.

Hooks scored her third marker of the season less than four minutes into the second frame. Freshman Joss Orejel switched the field with a long pass to Hogg on the right side. Hogg made an easy first touch to a wide open Hooks in the center of the box. Hooks fired the ball past Schiffel to extend CU's lead to 2-0.

The goal by Hooks ties her with Jerman and Carly Bolyard atop CU's scoring list.

"She [Brie Hooks] rises to the occasion," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "We have been challenging her to take more of a leadership role, and take more responsibility and accountability and I thought she was really good today."

Hogg and Hooks once again found themselves in the middle of another Buffs goal late in the match. They recorded a double-assist on Paxton's second goal of the year, which all but sealed the victory in the 77th minute. Hogg had possession and passed to Hooks sprinting toward the goal. Hooks made a move around the defender and connected with Paxton, open on the left side of the box. Paxton nailed her shot in the right corner, giving CU the 3-0 advantage.

The Dons (4-4-2), had a few opportunities late in the match to get on the board, firing three shots in a span of three minutes, but were not able to connect.

Colorado goalkeeper Kate Scheele only saw two shots on goal and saved them both, recording her sixth shutout of the 2014 campaign.

The Buffs extended their winning streak to four games, their longest of the season, and the victory improves their record to 7-2 entering Pac-12 competition next week.

"I think we definitely gained some confidence [after this weekend's matches]," said Hooks. "San Francisco is a good team and to have a good result like that, I think it really raises the confidence level and shows us that we can play in big games. Leading into Pac-12, we need that."

Colorado concludes its six-match homestand Saturday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. when it hosts No. 10 Cal at Prentup Field in its first Pac-12 Conference match of the season. Ralphie will make a special appearance at Sunday's match and there will be free giveaways and prizes courtesy of State Farm for early arriving fans.

Notable:
  • All three CU goals in the match came off double-assists
  • CU is now 2-2 in four matches against the Dons
  • The Buffs have shutout three of their last four opponents
