Cardinal bring 4-1 Pac-12 record to Coors Events Center
BOULDER - The schedule never lets up in the Pac-12. That was the theme of head coach JR Payne's postgame speech after a tough loss to No. 24/23 California on Friday night. Through five conference games, the Buffaloes have faced three ranked teams and welcome another one to the Coors Events Center in No. 13/12 Stanford on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be televised on Pac-12 Mountain Network.
"Every team [in this conference] is good," Payne said. "Next Friday our opponent will be good, next Sunday they'll be good. The personnel just changes out but they are [always] a very good team."
The Cardinal is one of six Pac-12 schools currently ranked in the Associated Press top 25 and the Buffs are one of three more teams receiving votes.
As has been the case with each opponent through the first five conference games, Stanford features one of the top players in the country. Senior forward Erica McCall was a first-team all-Pac-12 selection last year by both the media and coaches and averages 16.5 points and 8.9 rebounds this season. She's one of three Cardinal players averaging double figures in scoring, followed by Brittany McPhee (13.0) and Karlie Samuelson (11.5).
"They are good, they're big, they can shoot the ball, and they're experienced," Payne said of Stanford. "They have everything you want in a basketball team. They have size, perimeter players, post players, they can rebound. They are playing a lot faster than they have historically. Last year they sped up a little bit; this year they are playing even faster."
Perhaps the biggest area that stands out when looking at Stanford is the defense. The Cardinal is 23rd in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 55.5 points per game. At the same time, Stanford averages 75.4 points on offense and the scoring margin of +19.9 is the 12th-best in the nation.
Stanford (14-3, 4-1 Pac-12) is coming off a 77-58 win at Utah on Friday night. It was a balanced night offensively as seven players had seven or more points with Samuelson scoring a team-high 14. Defensively, the Cardinal held Utah to just 34 percent shooting. That matchup will be key as CU made a season-low 27 percent of its shots in Friday's 65-53 loss to Cal. Throughout the season, offense has been a strong point for the Buffs as they are shooting 42 percent from the floor after Friday's dismal night. Reverting back to the season's average will be key for an upset on Sunday.
