CU loses fifth straight, drops to 1-7 in Pac-12 Conference
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Colorado women's basketball team stayed close to deep and talented Oregon State for a quarter here Sunday afternoon, but the No. 11 Beavers owned the final three periods and rolled past the Buffaloes 81-57 in Gill Coliseum.
CU lost for the fifth straight time in Pac-12 Conference play (1-7) and has dropped eight of its past nine games (11-8 overall). OSU, the defending Pac-12 champion, improved to 18-2, 7-1.
"They're worthy of being Pac-12 champions . . . they're everything you want in a basketball team," CU coach JR Payne said.
Payne added, however, that she was "disappointed in our rebounding effort (OSU won that battle 48-31). Our effort wasn't there from a rebounding standpoint; our effort we control, and we didn't do a good job tonight . . . this is the first time in a while I thought we got outworked."
Alexis Robinson led the Buffs with 18 points and was the only CU player in double figures. Leading scorer Kennedy Leonard (18.9 ppg) was held scoreless in the first half and finished with six points on 2-of-5 3-pointers (2-of-10 overall).
Oregon State placed four players in double digits, led by Kolbie Orum's 16 and Kat Tudor's 14. Sydney Wiese added 13, with nine assists and seven rebounds, and Breanna Brown added 10 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Buffs led only once – 14-13 in the first quarter – and trailed 38-29 at halftime.
Behind only three points (20-17) at the end of the first period, CU didn't get its first field goal of the second period until nearly 4 minutes in, when OSU had taken its first eight-point lead.
The Buffs' 3-point shooting kept them close, with Makenzie Ellis and Robinson accounting for four of CU's five first-half treys (11 attempts) and Zoe Beard-Fails the other.
Robinson finished with 10 first-half points, Ellis eight. Leonard was held scoreless, going 0-for-4 from the field but contributing half of her team's eight assists.
The Buffs were out-rebounded 23-16 in the first two quarters and their bench was outscored 21-9. CU shot 36 percent from the field (11-of-31) in the first half, OSU 40 percent (12-of-30). The Buffs attempted only two first-half free throws, making both, while the Beavers went 9-of-11 from the line.
The Buffs needed to snap out of their recent third-quarter doldrums – they had been outscored 63-36 over the past three games' third periods – but the Beavers wouldn't let them.
OSU opened the quarter with a 6-0 run to take a 44-29 advantage. The Beavers hit six of their first seven shots in the third period and 10 of their first 13. They led by 21 points twice in the quarter and ended it with a 66-47 advantage, out-pointing the Buffs 28-18 in the period.
OSU led by as many as 27 points early in the final quarter.
TURNING POINT: Up 38-29 at halftime, Oregon State opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run, taking its first double-digit lead of the afternoon. The Beavers eventually outscored the Buffs 28-18 in the period and steadily pulled away thereafter.
CU STANDOUTS: Robinson hit 6-of-15 from the field and finished with 18 points. She hit 2-of-5 treys and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line. She also grabbed 5 rebounds . . . . Makenzie Ellis hit two of her four 3-point attempts and scored eight points . . . . Ariana Freeman went 4-of-8 from the field and contributed eight points . . . . Haley Smith had a team-high 10 rebounds.
KEY STATISTICS: The Beavers out-rebounded the Buffs 48-31, and their bench outscored CU's 40-18 . . . . The Buffs shot 32 percent from the field (21-of-65), the Beavers 47 percent (29-of-62) . . . . OSU committed 15 turnovers but CU converted those into only four points . . . . The Beavers had 24 assists to the Buffs' 11.
WHAT IT MEANS: The Buffs were overmatched Sunday and have been in four of their past five games playing Top 25 teams. But the Pac-12 is powerful this season and isn't a difficult place to be overmatched and overwhelmed. With a home game this week, the Buffs have a chance to snap their losing streak – and they need to capitalize on it.
NOTEWORTHY: Haley Smith recorded her fifth career game with 10+ rebounds and second this season . . . . Sunday marked the second time this season CU has had just one player score in double figures . . . . The Buffs' five-game losing streak is the longest of the season . . . . CU's five blocked shots are the most against a Pac-12 team this season.

Colorado Coach JR Payne
On how Oregon opened the game
"They're a fantastic team. They're everything I would want in a basketball team. They just beat us on the glass really badly and they're the best rebounding team in the league. I'm disappointed in our rebounding effort tonight. I thought for the first time in a while, we got outworked. And that's something that just can't happen. That's where our success comes from, where we're going to outwork people and never going to give in and we're going to be tough. For the first time in a while--maybe it's fatigue, I don't know what it is, but I thought they were tougher team."
On what was working well early in the game
"It's hard to stay with a team like that when Kennedy [Leonard]'s not scoring, but she wasn't. When we stayed with them, I thought Kenzie [Ellis] scored the ball well in the first half. We were being a little bit more aggressive, but we weren't getting to the free throw line as well as we needed to. I thought we did a better job in the first half of rebounding, but in the second half it got away from us."
NEXT UP: The Buffs return to the Coors Events Center to face Utah on Wednesday at 7 p.m. (Pac-12 Networks, radio 1190 am KVCU).
