CU Looking For Upset Against No. 10 Washington On Sunday
February 04, 2017 | Women's Basketball
BOULDER - Colorado welcomes perhaps the most entertaining team in the country to the Coors Events Center on Sunday when No. 10 Washington visits Boulder. Tipoff is scheduled for noon and it will be televised on Pac-12 Mountain Network.
Â
The Huskies (21-3 overall, 9-2 in the Pac-12) rank fifth in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 82.2 points, while allowing just 64.8 points per game. But it's U-Dub's personnel that makes Washington so fun to watch.
Â
Senior guard Kelsey Plum leads the nation in scoring (31.0) and has scored over 3,000 points already in her career and became the Pac-12's all-time leading scorer early this season. She's also shooting 45 percent from 3-point range and averaging 5.0 assists per game. She is a leading candidate for national player of the year and was an All-American a year ago and has scored 44 points twice this season.
Â
Senior center Chantel Osahor is entertaining as well in a different way, leading the nation in rebounding (14.8), while averaging 15.4 points. She is also known for her set-shot 3-pointer and she is connecting at a 36.0 percent rate from beyond the arc this season. She pulled down a Pac-12 record 30 rebounds in a game at Washington State two weeks ago.
Â
The Huskies have plenty of other weapons as well. Nebraska transfer Natalie Romeo connected on 10 3-point field goals and scored 32 points last week in a win over California and averages 9.8. Freshman Aarion McDonald had 19 points in last night's 82-53 win at Utah and is averaging 9.3 on the season.
Â
CU (13-9, 3-8 Pac-12) has plenty of reason for optimism, getting Washington in Boulder for the second game in three days at elevation (UW is located at sea level in Seattle and played in Salt Lake City Friday night). Last season at the Coors Events Center, the Huskies built a 20-point lead late in the second quarter, but the Buffs rallied to lead by five points at one point in the fourth quarter after outscoring UW 35-16 in the third quarter. Washington recovered late to hold on for a 76-74 victory. Plum was held to 18 points in the game, thanks in large part to Alexis Robinson's defense. But Osahor still had her way, scoring 24 points, including three 3-pointers, and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Â
Colorado put together a similar comeback last night in a 70-58 victory against Washington State. CU used a 21-2 run starting late in the third quarter and carried it through the midpoint of the fourth quarter. Kennedy Leonard was key in the rally, scoring 16 of her game-high 25 points in the final frame.
