Buffs Nipped by Cougs
November 03, 2019 | Soccer
Colorado falls 4-1 at WSU
PULLMAN, Wash. – The Palouse was not kind to the Colorado soccer team on Sunday. The Buffaloes dropped a 4-1 decision to Washington State, closing the weekend with a 1-1 record.Â
Washington State's Morgan Weaver had a career day against the Buffs. She scored all four goals for the Cougars on her Senior Day.Â
Senior Taylor Kornieck scored the Colorado goal, tying her career-high with 11 on the season. The score was the 38th of her career and her 99th career point.Â
The loss drops CU to 11-6-2 on the season and 3-5-2 in Pac-12 play. Washington State improves to 12-5-1 and 5-4-1 in the league.Â
How it happened
It was a slow start for the Buffs on Sunday. Colorado gave up a goal in the 3rd minute and was unable to establish much of an attack, spending a lot of time in the defensive zone.Â
Washington State outshot the Buffs, 11-4, in the first 45 minutes. Jalen Tompkins was big for Colorado in the first half, despite the early goal. She made three of her seven saves in the half, keeping Colorado within striking distance.
WSU opened the second half with a fury. The Cougars got back-to-back corner kicks to open the half, and Weaver capitalized on the second opportunity, giving WSU the 2-0 lead.Â
Weaver continued to push for WSU scoring on back-to-back shots in the 55th and 56th minute.Â
Kornieck put the Buffs on the board in the 61st minute, but it was too little too late for Colorado.Â

Head coach Danny Sanchez
Overall thoughts
"Washington State came out like it was their Senior Day. I thought we were tentative to start the game and credit to Washington State, they played very well today. They're a very good team. I felt 1-0 at halftime we played well. I thought we played well in the second half of the first half. To give up that goal, a minute into the second half was the backbreaker. We didn't play well enough today, but our focus is all on Utah for next Thursday.Â
On Morgan Weaver
"I'm sure WSU's coaches say the same thing. She's been quiet for about 10 games and then she got a couple on Thursday and got a few today. You can't keep a player down that long. We were hoping to maybe player her in the middle of the year when she was not playing like she did today. Credit to them, but it wasn't just her. I thought that their whole team played with a lot of energy. Their movement and attack were very good. I don't know that we deserve any more than we got out of this game. Having said that, I thought the last 30 minutes of the game slowed down and I was pleased with the players to come off the bench and give us some good minutes."
On scoring late
"You never want to get run over. It was a great assist from Stephanie [Zungia] and a great finish from Taylor [Korieck]. Then she hit the bar a couple of minutes later. We'll take some positives from that but the big picture of it is we just weren't good enough today."
