Colorado Unable To Take Down Cougars
October 19, 2023 | Soccer
PULLMAN, Wash. -Â Colorado suffered its first road loss of the season in a 1-0 defeat to Washington State Thursday night in the first of two matches on the road trip.Â
The Buffaloes are now 4-1-1 on the road this season.
After scoring just two goals in its last three games, Colorado (10-4-2, 2-3-2 Pac-12) couldn't get any sustained offense on Thursday, being shut out by the Cougars (9-5-1, 2-4-1 Pac-12). It didn't benefit the Buffs that they were without their leading goal-scorer, Shyra James, who accounts for 12 of Colorado's 27 goals this season.
"When you look at the game, we gave up one shot on goal and it was a goal," head coach Danny Sanchez stated after the match. "So from that side of things, I thought we did fine. Defending-wise we did well. We didn't do a good enough job going forward and that starts with everybody when we want possession."
Washington State's one shot on goal came in the first half in the 23rd minute, which proved to be the only goal from both sides. While the Cougars had just one shot on net, they had 11 total shots compared to Colorado's five, three of which were on target.
"At the end of the day, for all the action, there weren't a lot of quality chances for either team," said Sanchez. "They took advantage of the one opportunity they got, and especially in the second half, we didn't create enough in the final third to get anything out of the match."
Two of CU's scoring chances came from Faith Leyba and Hope Leyba and the third came from Juliauna Hayward. All three chances came in the first half of the match.
The Buffs will try to forget this loss as they look to bounce back against Washington on Sunday.
How it happened
The Cougars started fast with several scoring chances in the opening moments of the match. WSU earned three early corner opportunities but couldn't produce any shots on goal.
Colorado wasn't able to get many chances early on until Hope Leyba's shot in the 16th minute was scooped up by the Washington State keeper.
WSU put the ball in the back of the in the 23rd minute off a shot from a streaking Marige Detrizio, taking a 1-0 lead midway through the half.Â
Following the goal, the Buffs started to get things going offensively producing three corner kicks and three shots, but couldn't score a goal before halftime.
"We didn't have enough composure or quality going forward to create more than the chances we did," Sanchez said after the loss. "Having said that, we did create a few good chances, especially in the first half."
While Colorado did see some good looks in the first half, the team spent most of the second half in the defensive zone.
The Buffs had chances on the offensive end with two corner kicks but were unable to capitalize on either one. Two minutes after the first corner, Colorado recorded its only shot of the half which happened to be off target.
Washington State continued to control possession throughout the game which turned into six more shots. The Cougars' second-half offense forced Jordan Nytes and the CU defense to stay on their toes, but none of the shots were on target.
Upcoming
The Buffs will faceoff against the Washington Huskies on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT before heading back home to Boulder.
Quotes
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On moving on to Washington:Â "We'll recover over the next couple of days and Washington is on a good streak. They tied Stanford on Sunday, and they got a nice result tonight over Utah. They're at home and it's going to be a match where we're going to have to learn from this one and refocus our energies over the next couple of days and get ready for Washington."
