Buffs, Golden Bears Play to Scoreless Draw

October 08, 2023 | Soccer

CU picks up a point to close the weekend

BOULDER – No. 25 Colorado and California played to a scoreless draw to conclude the weekend at Prentup Field on Sunday.

It was the season's first draw for the Buffaloes, who sit at 10-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Pac-12. California moved to 5-3-5 on the season and 2-0-3 in conference play.

The draw brought an end to senior Shyra James' consecutive goal-scoring streak, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. James fired off a career-high eight shots on the afternoon. She had recorded a goal in the seven previous matches.

"Obviously, she's going to be the focal point of our attack," head coach Danny Sanchez explained. "But we have other players that created good opportunities [today]. We were just missing that final piece today."

The Buffs controlled just about every aspect of the match on Sunday. CU outshot Cal 18-5 and held an 8-6 advantage in corner opportunities. The Buffs landed five shots on target while limiting the Golden Bears to just one shot on goal.

"I thought we came out fantastic after the result on Thursday [loss to Stanford," Sanchez noted. "I think we really continued the momentum and created a lot of shots and corners but didn't create many great opportunities."

How it happened
Colorado got out on the attack early and kept pressing throughout the opening 45 minutes.

CU earned four corner chances in the first 12 minutes with James the primary target. She directed a header chance on goal, forcing Teagan Wy's first save of the day on CU's third corner chance.

Amaya Gonzalez and James had two more scoring opportunities with Gonzalez landing a shot on target in the 21st minute and James getting inside the box in the 42nd minute.

The Buffs outshout the Golden Bears 11-1 in the half and had eight corners in the opening period.

The Black and Gold almost struck paydirt right out of the half, earning a free kick in the 46th minute. Rachel Rosen's serve found Ally Clark inside the box. Clark's first shot was blocked in front and the rebound came right back to her for a second shot that forced Wy to dive to her left to make the save.

Colorado kept on the gas with another dangerous free-kick opportunity in the 53rd minute. Rosen again served it up on a platter, this time finding Faith Leyba on the far post. The freshman got a clean header off from the six-yard line and put it just over the crossbar.

Cal's lone shot on net came in the 57th minute with Soleil Dimry trying to sneak the ball across the goal mouth from distance. CU keeper Jordan Nytes got across her line and stretched to the top corner to make her only save of the day.

The chances kept coming for the Buffs with Hope Leyba being the benefactor of a Hayward ball in the 61st minute. Hayward played into space Leyba raced it down on her way into the box. Wy came charged off her line and Leyba poked the ball past her but it was wide of the open net.

James had two more chances late in the 86th minute. She snuck past the Cal defense and Emerson Layne slipped her the ball at the top of the goal box. James' attempt beat a charging Wy but was cleared away from the net by a Cal defender. Seconds later James put a header on net, but right to Wy for the save.

Colorado had one last charge in the 90th minute with H. Leyba making a run down the middle of the field, but she was whistled for a late offside call.

Upcoming
Colorado looks to break a three-match winless streak next week in Los Angeles. The Buffs will take on No. 15 USC in the rare Saturday matchup.

Quotes
Head coach Danny Sanchez
On the second half: "We started to press a little bit as we're trying to find that goal and we didn't quite have the composure that we needed going forward. Having said that, there's no shame in getting a draw with Cal. It's a very good team. Now all of our focus is on USC."

On playing tighter in a scoreless match: "I think it's natural to look at the clock and see that we've had a lot of opportunities. We had a lot of corner kicks. We had some dangerous free kicks. You start to press a little bit. Goals change games. We needed our goal in the first half to change the game. We just weren't able to have enough in the final third to get the goal we needed."

On getting results in Pac-12 play: "There are no easy ones in conference play, home or away. I think we left some points out there today. But we did defend well. We gave up one shot on goal to Cal, so we'll take the positives from it and just get ready for USC next week."

Notes
Colorado is winless in three matches (0-2-1) for the first time since finishing last season 0-4-2 in the last six games…Nytes recorded her sixth shutout of the season, matching CU's shutout total from 2022…Sunday was the first scoreless draw since a 0-0 2OT draw at Washington on Feb. 26, 2021…James' eight shots are tied for the 10th most in CU history.
