Buffs, No. 13 Trojans Draw in LA

October 14, 2023 | Soccer

Both teams get early first-half goals

OS ANGELES — Colorado's Shyra James recorded her career-high 12th goal of the season and in the process, helped the Buffaloes pick up a point in Saturday's 1-1 draw against the No. 13 Southern California Trojans.

Colorado remains at 10 wins, picking up its second consecutive draw to move to 10-3-2 on the season and 2-2-2 in the Pac-12. Saturday was the first blemish on the unbeaten card for the Trojans, going to 5-0-1 in Pac-12 play and 9-2-1 overall.

The draw pushes the Buffs' unbeaten streak on the road to five matches, holding strong at 4-0-1. It's the best road for CU since a six-game unbeaten streak in 2018.

"This was a tough match today and it's a tough stretch [for us]," head coach Danny Sanchez said after the result. "It doesn't get any easier next week at the Washingtons. It's a quick turnaround for us, but I really like the determination of the group. I was really pleased with how our backs played today and how we defended the midfield. We created more chances today than we did in the last couple of matches. I'm pleased with that and pleased with the result. We know playing at Washington State next week is going to be another huge challenge."

The Trojans jumped to the lead early on but the Buffs kept at it and responded seven minutes later.

USC outshot Colorado 19-9 overall but the shots on goal were even at six apiece.

How it happened
USC got on the board in the opening minutes with Kyla Colbert finding the back of the net in the 3rd minute.

The Buffs didn't take long to respond, getting the equalizer in the 10th minute. Ava Priest made a run towards net and was taken down in the penalty area. James was elected to take the penalty kick and slotted it into the left corner, scoring her eighth goal in the last nine matches.

The Buffs got a second chance from the penalty spot in the 31st minute. USC's keeper Hannah Dickinson took out a charging Hope Leyba drawing a yellow card. James went back to the spot and was denied by Dickinson but was ruled off her line. Jade Babcock-Chi took the second chance and was turned away.

"Credit to their keeper," Sanchez added. "She made a couple of nice saves. She was off her line on the first one and she made a nice save on the second one. It could have been a real opportunity for us to hand our heads, but not this year. Not with this group. They just kept working and deservedly got a result on the road."

The Buffs were the aggressors right out of the break, earning a corner kick 15 seconds into the second half. Amaya Gonzalez served the ball up from the far corner and found the head of H. Leyba. Leyba directed the ball on net and was saved off the line by a USC defender to keep the stalemate intact.

Gonzalez teamed up with James on a corner kick in the 60th minute, with James heading it on net from 10 yards out but right to Dickinson in the middle of her net.

USC pressed midway through the half with Jordan Nytes needing to make three saves in the second period.

CU's final chance was again off a late corner chance. Faith Leyba headed the feed to herself inside the box and put the follow-up header off the crossbar in the 85th minute. The rebound remained in the box and Priest fired it back on target, forcing Dickinson to make the save.

"I was pleased with how we played in the second half," Sanchez expressed. "First, with how we defended. All their [USC's] best chances were all in the last five minutes. I thought before that we created some really good opportunities from the run of play but also some corner kicks where they cleared one off the line and we hit the post. We had some good chances today, but it was probably a fair result over 90 minutes."

Upcoming
Colorado will head back to Boulder for a quick breath before traveling back to the West Coast to take on Washington State (Thursday) and Washington (Sunday).

Notes
