Colorado’s Late Surge Secures Win Over Boston

November 28, 2023 | Women's Basketball

Frida Formann surpasses 1,000 career points for the Buffs

BOULDER – No. 7 Colorado took down the Boston Terriers in an 85-55 bounce-back win behind an incredibly strong fourth quarter Tuesday night inside the CU Events Center.

The Buffaloes (7-1) outscored Boston (5-2) by 26 points (30-4) in the final quarter and had scoring runs of 16 and 13 to put the Terriers away. Boston took the lead multiple times in the third, however, Colorado's aggressive play to close out the game turned the tide and helped the Buffs secure the victory.

"They didn't guard us any differently in the fourth quarter, we just made a decision that we were going to be more aggressive and got the ball inside more effectively," head coach JR Payne said after the win. "Also just on the perimeter, penetrating, collapsing and moving the defense a little bit made all the difference in the world."

Frida Formann had a night to remember as she became the 34 Buff to surpass 1,000 career points while also passing former Buff, Kate Fagan for the sixth most made 3-pointers in Colorado history with 201. Tonight, she led the team with 22 points, cashing in on five 3s and adding six steals on the defensive end.

"It feels really great," Formann commented on reaching 1,000 points. "I think it's something that you obviously dream of, scoring a lot of points and contributing to the program. I'm really happy that I got to do that especially here at CU. It means a lot to me to have been here for these three and fourth years and do that."

Colorado's veteran core seemed to rally the troops late after finding themselves down by three points approaching the end of the third quarter. Aaronette VonlehJaylyn Sherrod and Quay Miller all scored double-digit points to help put an end to Boston's comeback bid.

A big difference-maker tonight was Colorado's points off turnovers and steals. CU had 27 total points off turnovers, 18 of which came in the fourth quarter while also recording 18 steals, 12 of which came in the fourth quarter as well.

"We were turning them over, but we weren't reaping the reward for it," said Payne. "It's great when we can do it. It's even better when you can turn someone over and then score the ball out of that. We really trust ourselves defensively, we know that we can guard."

The Buffs forced the Terriers into 27 turnovers while committing just eight of their own in the game.

BU was led by Caitlin Weimar and her 16 points and 12 rebounds.

No. 7 Colorado will take a short trip to the Air Force Academy to play the Falcons on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. MT

HOW IT HAPPENED
After jumping out to a 4-0 start, Colorado let up a layup followed by a 3-pointer to trail at 5-4. Later in the quarter, the Buffs scored six unanswered points on back-to-back 3-pointers to take the lead at 12-7.

The Terriers converted three of their last four field goals of the quarter to tie things up at 16-16 heading into the second.

After giving up the first points of the quarter, Colorado hit back-to-back 3s once again as Formann hit both from the corner. She was then fouled on a 3-point attempt and cashed in on all three free throws to extend the Buffs' scoring run to 9-0.

Sherrod hit a jumper to make it 11 unanswered, forcing a Boston timeout with the Buffs up 27-18 with 7:22 remaining in the quarter. After scoring the first basket 10 seconds into the quarter, Boston went scoreless for the next 5:35. Colorado took advantage and went into halftime with a 35-27 lead.

The Terriers outscored the Buffs 12-4 in the opening minutes of the third quarter to come within just one at 39-38 and would take the lead 48-46 lead with 3:51 to go in the quarter. The Buffs stormed back with an 8-1 to head into the fourth quarter up 55-51.

Colorado scored six straight points to open the final quarter, taking a 10-point lead and forcing another Boston timeout. Out of the break, the Buffs extended their scoring run to 18, taking a commanding lead at 71-51. Later on, the Buffs were able to clear their bench following a 16-0 run and went on to win the game by 30 points.

KEY MOMENT
The Buffs outscored Boston 8-1 to finish the third quarter before scoring the first 16 points of the fourth to put the Terriers away. In all, it was a 24-1 run that propelled the Buffs to the victory. Vonleh had eight points in the run with Sherrod adding in six.
