CU closes the homestand with a 3-0 shutout
BOULDER- The Colorado Buffaloes Soccer team closed out its seasoning opening six-game homestand with a 3-0 win over Purdue at Prentup Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Buffs (5-1-0) got on the board early in the 24th minute off of the right foot of fifth-year senior Amaya Gonzalez to give her first goal of the season. Freshman Faith Leyba extended the lead off of a corner kick, notching her second goal of the season. Her sister, Hope Leyba, notched her first career tally late in the contest to help put the game out of reach.
"I thought it was a very good performance," head coach Danny Sanchez believed. "Sometimes when you come off an emotional win like we did Thursday against NC State there's a letdown, but I didn't see one today. I thought we controlled the tempo throughout the game and scored some really good goals, all three goals were really good. We defended really well as a team collectively and really limited Purdue's opportunities. It's a great win for the Buffs."
Sophomore Jordan Nytes picked up her fourth shutout of the season. She made two saves in the first half to keep the Boilermakers off the board, finishing with three saves on the day.
How it happened
Gonzalez got the scoring for the Buffs started, blasting home a failed clear attempt. Graduate transfer Ally Clark made a run down the near sideline and centered the ball into the box. A Purdue defender headed the ball out but not to safety. The ball bounced to Gonzalez in space and she hit it off the bounce into the top left corner.
"I didn't expect the ball to come to me, but it was just a quick reaction," Gonzalez said on her goal. "I don't know where the ball came from, but when it bounced out to me I took a touch and it was still in my range and I went for it. It felt really good to start the game off with a goal."
Shortly after the goal from Gonzalez, she took a corner kick for the Buffs where she set up F. Lebya to head in the goal to extend the lead. Gonzalez's assist was her fourth of the season and it marked her first career game with a goal and an assist.
Colorado continued to put pressure on Purdue in the first half, outshooting the Boilermakers 10-4 in the period. Jade Babcock-Chi, Ally Clark and Shyra James each had scoring opportunities in the opening half, but couldn't add to the lead.
Going into halftime the game was put into a lightning delay of 18 minutes and 40 seconds before the start of the second half.
Both teams tightened things up on defense early on in the second half, limiting each side to two shots on goal. But in the 85th minute freshman Ava Priest broke down the left side of the box and delivered a pass to H. Leyba, who was wide open for for the third and final goal of the afternoon.
Upcoming
The Buffs hit the road for the first time this season on Thursday, taking on the preseason favorite in the Mountain West, New Mexico.
Quotes
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On the opening goal: "It was a great cross from Ally Clark and the keeper punched it out. Sometimes you get in those spots and you panic, Amaya had great composure to settle it and smack it in the upper 90. A great goal from her, but her performance throughout the match was excellent."
On maintaining the lead: "We talked a lot about finding a third goal. Purdue is a very good team that is coached very well and if they get it 2-1, then now we're panicking and it becomes more than it needs to be. I thought getting that third goal really killed the match off which was key to us being able to settle down."
On going on the road for the first time: "We're excited, New Mexico is the preseason pick to win the Mountain West. They're a very good team and they have a great home crowd. I'm very experienced with going there from my Wyoming days. It's a tough place to go and get a result. We're going to have to be at the top of our game on Thursday."
