Colorado set to take on the Wildcats for the first time
IRVING, Texas — Colorado goalkeeper Jordan Nytes picked up her second Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week honor ahead of the Buffaloes' Big 12 opener at Kansas State.
The weekly honor is Nytes' fourth in the Big 12, having collected two as a freshman at Oklahoma State in 2022. Overall, it marks her sixth weekly conference award, having earned two Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week honors last season.
The 5-7 keeper out of Centennial, Colo., made nine saves in two shutout victories in last week's action against Denver and Weber State. The two clean sheets bring her shutout total to five this season.
Nytes has backstopped the No. 19 Buffs to five straight wins, including four consecutive shutouts. Her five total shutouts this season are tied for the most in the Big 12 and rank third in the NCAA. Nytes hasn't conceded a goal since the final minute of the North Carolina match (Aug. 18), posting a shutout streak of 429:52. It's the seventh-longest shutout streak by minutes in CU history. Her four consecutive shutouts rank tied for the second-longest in program history.
Since rejoining the conference, Nytes has collected both of CU's Big 12 weekly honors. It is the 33rd Big 12 honor collected by the Buffs and the second Goalkeeper of the Week award. Prior to Nytes, the last CU soccer player to earn a Big 12 weekly award was Annie Brunner's Newcomer of the Week honor on Nov. 2, 2010.
The Goalkeeper of the Week award started in the 2020 season. Goalkeepers were previously honored as Defensive Player of the Week.
Buffs Open Big 12 Play at K-State
MANHATTAN, Kan. — Colorado (6-1-0) readies for its second road test of the season, heading to Manhattan, Kan., for the first time on Thursday.
The Big 12 opener will be the Buffs' first conference match since taking on Texas A&M in the 2010 Big 12 Tournament. The No. 19 Buffs enter the conference season as one of two Big 12 teams in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25, joining No. 15 Oklahoma State. The Buffaloes ride the conference's longest active winnings streak into Big 12 play, having won their last five contests.
"We're excited," head coach Danny Sanchez said about getting into the Big 12 season. "Obviously, we were in [the conference] in the past before I got here. I came to CU in our second season in the Pac-12. Bug CU Soccer had a lot of success back in the day in the Big 12. I think the conference is stronger now with teams like TCU, BYU and so forth. I think it's wide open. When you look at the Pac-12, only two teams have ever won it: UCLA and Stanford. I think going to the Big 12, things are wide open. I think numerous teams could have success."
Colorado competed in the Big 12 for its first 15 seasons from 1996-2010. CU's first tenure in the league was highlighted by winning the 2003 Big 12 regular season championship. The Buffs departed the Big 12 after the 2010 season with 69 conference wins and a .510 winning %.
In their return, the Buffs still rank in the top four in the Big 12 in winning % among active members. BYU posted a 7-0-3 (.850) record in its first season in the conference in 2023, while TCU owns a .572 winning % over its 12 seasons. UCF went 5-4-1 (.550) in its first year as a member of the Big 12 last season.
Thursday marks the first of 11 conference matches in the lead up to the Big 12 Tournament, which will kick off on Oct. 30 in Kansas City.
"The team is very excited about that," Sanchez said about the prospects of playing in the Big 12 Tournament. "Having an opportunity to play the season, but also have an opportunity to compete for two championships, and have an opportunity to go to Kansas City and be in a knockout situation where it's not the NCAA Tournament where it's one-and-done. Now it's maybe one-and-done, and you can get another shot if you're able to get that at-large bid."
Thursday's match will be the first between the Buffs and Wildcats. Kansas State's soccer program didn't start until the 2017 season. The Wildcats finished 1-8-1 last season in the Big 12 and 3-12-3 overall. This season, K-State is off to a 3-3-1 start.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. MT on ESPN+.
