Nytes Goes Back-to-Back, No. 21 Colorado Set for Showdown in Stillwater
September 18, 2024 | Soccer
The Buffaloes continue Big 12 play on the road at No. 12 Oklahoma State
IRVING, Texas — Colorado goalkeeper Jordan Nytes continued her dominance in net for the Buffaloes last week, picking up her second consecutive Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week honor on Wednesday.
The weekly honor is Nytes' third of the season and the fifth of her career, having collected two as a freshman at Oklahoma State in 2022. Overall, it marks her seventh weekly conference award, earning two Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week honors last season.
The 5-7 goalkeeper is the first player to earn back-to-back Goalkeeper of the Week honors since Texas' Mia Justus earned the award in consecutive weeks last season (Sept. 13, Sept. 20). It's the second time Nytes has earned back-to-back honors in the Big 12 having done so on Sept. 20 and Sept. 27 while at OSU in 2022.
The native of Centennial, Colo., made five saves in The Buffs' 1-0 shutout win to open Big 12 play last week at Kansas State. The win was her sixth shutout of the season and her 14th as a member of the Buffs.
Nytes has helped captain No. 21 Colorado to six straight wins, including five consecutive shutouts. Her six total shutouts this season are tied for the most in the Big 12 and rank second in the NCAA. Nytes hasn't conceded a goal since the final minute of the North Carolina match (Aug. 18), posting the second-longest consecutive shutout streak in CU history (519:52). Her five consecutive shutouts are tied for the longest streak in program history in terms of matches.
Since rejoining the conference, Nytes has collected all three of CU's Big 12 weekly honors. It is the 34th Big 12 honor collected by the Buffs and the third Goalkeeper of the Week award. Before Nytes, the last CU soccer player to earn a Big 12 weekly award was Annie Brunner's Newcomer of the Week honor on Nov. 2, 2010.
The Goalkeeper of the Week award started in the 2020 season. Goalkeepers were previously honored as Defensive Player of the Week.
Top 25 teams meet in Stillwater
Colorado (7-1-0, 1-0-0) continues its opening stretch of Big 12 play on the road this week, opening at No. 12 Oklahoma State.
Thursday's match will be just the Buffs' third road match of the season. CU hasn't matched up with the Cowgirls since the 2016 NCAA Tournament in Boulder and hasn't visited Stillwater since the 2010 season.
"I think that we've been on the road a couple of times, and we've been a little battle-tested; we feel good going on the road," head coach Danny Sanchez expressed. "I think we'll be able to adjust to a different environment quickly on Thursday."
The two sides have had similar trajectories to start the season. The Cowgirls, who were picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 preseason poll, have now been ranked in the last five United Soccer Coaches polls, while the Buffs have appeared in the previous four polls.
OSU (8-0-1, 1-0-0) is the last unbeaten team remaining in the Big 12. The Cowgirls have yet to concede a goal in nine matches this season, outscoring opponents 24-0. The Buffs have a +13-goal differential through eight matches.
"Oklahoma State has had a tremendous start to its season," Sanchez continued. "They're well coached and have a lot of depth to their squad. If you look at their matches, they haven't given up a goal, but they haven't given up many opportunities. They've earned the results they've gotten so far. There's a lot of soccer to be played, but it's obviously a key matchup early in conference play. We're going to have to be at the top of our game to get a result."
Colorado's six-match winning streak is tied for the sixth-longest in CU history and is tied for the fifth-longest streak in the NCAA. CU's streak started following its lone loss to then No. 8 North Carolina (Aug. 18).
The Black and Gold are 0-1-0 against top 25 opponents this season. The loss to the Tar Heels was the first of what was supposed to be two matches against ranked opponents in the preseason. CU's game at No. 25 North Carolina State was canceled due to severe weather. OSU opened its season with a win over then No. 9 Nebraska in its lone ranked match of the year.
"I think if you look at their results and our results, they're not drastically different," Sanchez commented. "They've obviously defended very well and been very efficient going forward. On paper, it looks like a pretty even matchup."
Colorado will cap off its three-game Big 12-opening road swing with a visit to Iowa State on Sunday (11 a.m. MT).
Thursday's Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. MT on ESPN+.
