Buffs Suffer DQ At Guadalajara
January 31, 2025 | Women's Golf
GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Colorado's women's golf spring season got off to a rocky start as an unfortunate series of events disqualified the Buffaloes from the team competition at the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club that teed off Friday.
Colorado junior Morgan Miller was unable to make the start due to an illness which left the Buffaloes no room for error as all four remaining golfers would go toward the team score.
Freshman Sydney Givens then signed an incorrect scorecard after the first round, which led to a disqualification. Since Colorado didn't have four players to contribute to the team score, the team's first round was erased, taking the Buffaloes out of the team competition.
No. 12 ranked Florida State, at 5-under, has a four-stroke lead over No. 11 Virginia and No. 23 TCU in the unique tournament format that played 27 holes – a round and a half – on Friday. The back nine of the second round and the third and final round will be played on Saturday.
"Just a devastating end of the day given how well the team showed up this morning knowing we were short handed and only competing with four golfers," head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "And to have that hard work washed out by a scoring error is brutal, but that's part of the game of golf."
Colorado was in the midst of having a very solid day. Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch and redshirt freshman Vanessa Ngo both shot opening rounds of 1-under-par 71 and were tied with six others for eighth place at the conclusion of the first round.
Ngo was 3-over through seven holes but picked up a birdie at the turn on the 483-yard, par 5, ninth. She kept that momentum on the back with four birdies, including back-to-back on the par 3 17th and par 5 18th to finish the round.
Eidhagen Harrouch had three birdies on the front nine, making the turn at 2-under. She had a hiccup with a bogey at the par 4 10th but made par on her final eight holes to register her team-best seventh under-par round of the season.
Colorado, unofficially, would have been right in the mix in the top half of the leaderboard through 27 holes.
"This is something that happens at every level of the game every once in a while, and the timing of it today when we're short handed is what makes it so brutal." Sheils said. "However, we are playing really great golf right now. This team is so determined to get better every day and we've seen that, at our training weekend (in Arizona) and the way that they showed up here. We'll continue to get better as we progress throughout the spring and find a way back from such a disappointing start."
Overall Ngo is tied for 10th after 27 holes at even-par, playing the first nine of the second round at 1-over. Eidhagen Harrouch is one stroke back at 1-over and tied for 16th overall.
"Maria is a phenomenal ball striker and she's been hitting it beautifully and managing her way around a very tight course," Sheils said. "Vanessa is striking and putting it well, it's fun to see her start to put some good scores together and we're excited for the direction her game is trending."
Sophomore Carolyn Fuller is tied for 29th at 4-over. She shot a 74 in the first round with birdies at the 11th and 18th and shot 2-over on the front nine of the second round.
Givens is at 1-over through the first nine holes of the second round after her first-round score was wiped out.
Colorado will pair with Iowa and Colorado State to complete the second round off the No. 10 tee Saturday morning beginning at 7 a.m. MT as the Buffaloes will compete as individuals for the rest of the competition.
