Knight One Shot Out Of Lead; Swanson, Paxton In The Hunt As Well
STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of Colorado men's golf team slipped from being in a tie for first into one for second – but it wasn't because of its play – as the second round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational was completed here Friday.
Host Pacific tied the 11th-best single round in NCAA history – a 25-under par 263 – to break the tie with the Buffaloes and assume solo possession of the lead with a 539 score, a whopping 37-under par for 36 holes, a shade over a stroke per hole. The Tigers' five scorers combined for 28 birdies and just three bogeys, with four players shooting in the 60's, two with bogey-free rounds.
Colorado recorded a second straight 12-under 276, albeit after a slow start, with UC San Diego catching the Buffs in a tie for second with 24-under 552 scores. The University of San Diego is fourth (16-under 560) with Sacramento State rounding out the top five (7-under 269).
The Buffaloes were never on the unhappy side of par Friday, but was stuck at 12-under off and on, with the four players who wound up contributing to the team score 3under through nine. All finished in the red on the back nine (9-under), including an eagle and six birdies with on bogey on the final three holes.
"We clawed our way back into the tournament," head coach Roy Edwards said. "Pacific shot one of the best rounds I've ever seen in college and will be difficult to catch but we are in the conversation and need to focus on ourselves tomorrow.
Junior Brandon Knight continued to lead the Buffalo charge here, firing a 4-under 68 for a 9-under 135, his collegiate career-best score for 36 holes, on the 7,189-yard, par-72 course at The Reserve at Spanos Park. He is tied for second with three others, one stroke out of the lead. He opened strong, with four birdies on his first eight holes (on Nos. 2, 3, 6 and 8), before his first bogey on the 9th; that ended a run of 44 straight holes of par or better, the third-longest streak in school history (it featured an eagle, 11 birdies and 32 pars). He bogeyed three of his next four holes before closing with two birdies down the stretch. He had a team-high seven birdies Friday (10 over the two rounds), with eight pars and the three bogeys. He's playing all configurations under par as well, 5-under on the par-5's, and 2-under on both the par-3's and par-4's (tied for the best in the field on the par-3's).
Senior Hunter Swanson carded a 3-under 69, and stands in a tie for seventh with a 7-under 137. He was 3-under through 11, extending his streak to 33 consecutive holes of par or better before he had one of his two bogeys Friday (he had eight birdies and 25 pars in the streak, the second-longest of his career and the fourth of 30 or more bogey free holes). He otherwise had five birdies and 11 pars in round two, with nine and 25, respectively overall. He is also under par on all configurations (3-under on the par-4's – sixth-best in the event – and par-5's, 1-under on the par-3's)
Sophomore Parker Paxton, is tied for 10th with a 6-under 138 total after fashioning a 4-under 68 in the second round. He got off to a bit of a rough start, as after opening with a birdie and par, he bogeyed three straight holes. He bounced back with birdies on Nos. 6 and 8 to pull even at the turn, and following a run of birdie-par-bogey to open the back nine, played the last six holes at 4-under, including an eagle on the 535-yard, par-5 16th. He had six birdies overall with the eagle and seven pars opposite four bogeys, playing the par-5's the best by here by a Buffalo at 6-under, tied for third-best in the 96-man field. He's 2-under on the par-4's and 2-over on the par-3's.
Freshman Tyler Long posted a second consecutive 1-under 71, as he is tied for 22nd with a 2-under 142. He was 1-over through 10 once again, but got back on track with a birdie on the 538-yard, par-5 11th. He has seven birdies and 24 pars with five bogeys overall, as the true freshman has continued to avoid big numbers (just three doubles in 198 holes), with six straight par or better rounds (with a high score of only 74). He's playing the par-5's at 4-under and the par-4's even and 2-over on the par-3's.
Junior Ty Holbrook is tied for 56th after he recorded a 4-over 76, never able to get a lot going as he is in at 4-over 148 through two rounds. He had 14 pars and four bogeys, with his 27 pars over the two days tied for the team-high. He made the turn even after nine straight pars, but he bogeyed three of the first five on the back nine. He was even on the par-5's, as for the season he has continued his mastery of the long ones: of 44 par-5's holes to date his fall, he has two eagles, 29 birdies, 11 pars and just two bogeys (or 31-under).
He's 3-under on the par-5's overall, 1-over on the par-3's and 6-over on the par-4's.
First-year graduate transfer Jackson Rivera is competing here as an individual (his scores won't count toward the CU team total), and is returning to form when he had a spectacular season as a freshman at Southern California. He posted an even-par 72 for a 3-under 141, which has him tied for 16th. He has seven bogeys and is tied for team-lead with 27 pars, meaning he has just two holes worse than par, a bogey and an unfortunate triple (on his ninth hole, the 399-yard, par-4 18th, which played the third-toughest Friday) that he was able to rebound from. He's playing the par-5's at 4-under, the par-3's at 1-under and the par-4's at 2-over). There are 11 players competing here individually; he's tied for second amongst that group, one stroke off the pace
"It was good finish after a very bad start or mid-round struggles by Parker, Brandon, Tyler and Hunter," Edwards noted. "Jackson made a triple on his 9th hole and did a good job coming back and shooting two-under on his second nine. I'm always impressed when players are able to maintain their composure and emotions in difficult rounds and those guys all did a good job of that. It's a necessity to have that attitude to be a great golfer."
San Diego's Ian Maspat maintained the individual lead, though it shrunk from three strokes to one after he recorded a 2-under 70 for a 10-under 134. As was the case after 18 holes, that leads four players – including CU's Knight – but this time by a single stroke. There are 20 players within six strokes of the top spot, with three other Buffs within striking distance (Swanson, Paxton and Rivera.
The third and final round is set for Saturday morning; the Buffaloes will be paired with Pacific and the UC San Diego, teeing off No. 1 in 9-minute intervals beginning at 10:09 a.m. MDT. Colorado has one tournament left on its fall schedule, the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate, set for Oct. 27-29 in Lahaina, Maui.
