Buffs’ Tandem Ranks Amongst Best in the Nation
October 19, 2025 | Soccer
Colorado’s top two scorers are putting up staggering numbers
PROVO, Utah — Junior Hope Leyba and sophomore Jace Holley are both having career years and putting up stats that only names like CU greats Nikki Marshall, Shyra James and Taylor Kornieck have seen.
The two Buffaloes are responsible for 62.5% of Colorado's goals on the pitch this season, and those aren't small numbers either. The duo has combined for 25 of the team's 40 goals so far in 2025.
Leyba leads the No. 21 Buffs with 14 goals and 29 points this season, while Holley is right on her heels with 11 goals and 26 points. Leyba has spent the majority of the season leading the nation in both categories, and Holley has been hovering in the top 10.
Entering Monday's marquee matchup against BYU, Leyba sits second in the NCAA in goals and fourth in points. Holley ranks 11th in both categories. The CU teammates are just one of two pairs in the top 11 in both goals and points, with Xavier boasting two players as well.
The pair are the first Buffs to have 10 or more goals in the same season since James (11) and Civana Kulhmann (12) in 2022. But Leyba and Holley have been more consistent all season. James scored just one of her 11 goals in conference play in 2022, while Kulhmann was an even 50/50 split. This season, Leyba has scored five of her goals in conference play, including a hat trick—her second of the season—against Iowa State. Holley has found the net three times in Big 12 play, including the past two matches and three of the last four.
As far as individual records go, Leyba ranks third in single-season history in goals, trailing just James with 15 in 2023 and Marshall with 17 in 2006. Holley is tied for eighth with four regular-season matches left on the schedule.
Holley's numbers are already the best by a junior in program history, leapfrogging Kornieck's 28 points in 2018 and Katie Griffin's 12 goals in 2005. Holley surpassed Brie Hooks' 23 points in 2014 and Marshall's nine goals in 2007 to claim the top spots in a sophomore season.
The Buffs are going to need offensive contributions from Leyba, Holley and the rest for the pack against the Cougars. Colorado (11-2-2, 5-1-1) enters the match ahead of BYU (8-4-2, 3-3-1) in the Big 12 standings.
Monday will be the 10th meeting between the two programs, but the first in conference play. The two sides played to a 2-2 draw in Provo the last time they met in 2022. Colorado picked up a 3-0 win in Boulder in 2017. A win on Monday would be CU's first in Provo.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. MT on ESPN+.
