LAHAINA, Maui – The University of Colorado men's golf team opened its final competition of the fall season in a tie for eighth place here Monday after one round was completed in the 11th Annual Ka'anapali Classic by OUTRIGGER.
No. 21 Oklahoma, the three-time defending champion here, got off to a good start to make in its bid to make it four straight, as the Sooners recorded a 21-under par team score of 263 to have a four-shot lead after 18 holes. No 59 TCU holds second place (267), with North Florida third (273) and a three-way tie for fourth at 273 between No. 40 Georgia, No. 58 Florida Gulf Coast and No. 103 Boise State.
The Buffaloes, after a slow start, finished round one with an 8-under 276 and are in a five-way tie for eighth. It was CU's 12th subpar round out of 13 thus far this fall. Five of CU's six players on Monday did post subpar scores, however.
Junior Ty Holbrook fashioned his second bogey-free round of the season – and his career – in carding a 4-under 67 on the 6,700-yard, par-71 Royal Ka'anapali golf course on the west side of Maui. Starting in the shotgun format on No. 5, he birdied Nos. 9 and 11 before parring out on the back nine; he then closed with birds on Nos. 1 and 4 to get four down in the red and is tied for 10th. Thus, he had four birdies and 14 pars – the latter tied for seventh in the 120-man field, and played the par-4's and par-5's both at 2-under and the par-3's even, the only Buff not on the unhappy side of par on the short holes in the first round. Holbrook continued his mastery of par-5's this fall: he birdied two of the three here (par on the third), and now for the fall, of the 51 par-5's on his scorecards, he has two eagles, 34 birdies, 12 pars and two bogeys, which computes to 36-under par.
Holbrook's bogey-free round was one of nine recorded in the field for the first round. His other in his career came last month in the first round of CU's Mark Simpson Invitational.
Sophomore Parker Paxton, CU's stroke average leader coming in (69.0), is tied for 34th after posting a 2-under 69 effort, his team-leading eighth round in the 60's this fall. It also extended his school record streak to 13 subpar rounds, now three more than previously done in school annals. Steady as always, he tied for the team-high with six birdies – tied for seventh in the field as well -- along with nine pars opposite two bogeys and a double. He's 2-under on the par-4's and par-5's and 2-over on the par-3's. He bogeyed his second hole of the day (the 474-yard, par-4 5th), but righted his ship immediately with three birdies on his next four holes.
First-year graduate transfer Jackson Rivera is tied for 51st after carding a 1-under 70. He opened his day with 10 straight pars, before going bogey-double on Nos. 16 and 17 to rise to 3-over. His response was to birdie his next three holes, and then finish par-birdie-par to get into the red. He had four birdies and 12 pars otherwise, and played the par-4's and par-5's at 1-under and the par-3's at 1-over. It was his sixth straight round of par or better.
Senior Hunter Swanson also posted a 1-under 70 to match Rivera, getting there with identical numbers: four birdies, 12 pars, one bogey and one double. He got off to the best start of all the Buffs here, with birdies on two of his first three holes (Nos. 4 and 6). He was in the red all day, at one point 3-under until a rare double bogey for him – just his second this season – on the 190-yard, par-3 2nd knocked him down to 1-under. He was 2-under on the par-4's and par-5's, and like most of his teammates, was over on the par-3's (plus-3).
Junior Brandon Knight is tied for 93rd after posting a 2-over 73 score; he got off to a rough start, bogeying three of his first four holes and stood at 4-over through six. He then settled in, scoring pars on the last eight holes on the back nine, and then scoring birdies on two of his final four holes (Nos. 1 and 4). In the end, he had three birdies, 11 pars, three bogeys and one double, playing the par-3's at 1-over, the par-5's at 1-under and the par-4's at 2-over while ending his round with 13 straight holes of par or better.
Freshman Tyler Long is competing here as an individual (his scores are not counting toward CU's team total); he matched Paxton with a team-high six birdies en route to recording a 3-under 68 that has him tied for 24th. It was his eighth straight round of par or better (seven of those subpar), tying the freshman school record first set by Jeremy Paul during the 2013-14 season and equaled by Justin Biwer in '20-21. Long played the par-4 holes at 4-under, third-best in the field and just one stroke off the leaders, with his birdie count also tied for seventh overall. He otherwise had 10 pars, a bogey and a double (which he opened his day with and then bounced back strong) and played the par-5's at 1-under and the par-3's at 2-over.
"Ty was bogey-free and that is always good, no matter the round, the course or the tournament," head coach Roy Edwards said. "'Otherwise, it was a laboursome type of day. We didn't get off to a very good start, and we started on some of the easiest holes. We made a lot of uncharacteristic, unforced errors early on. But we hung in there really well despite all the mistakes. Tyler and Jackson did a nice job despite being two- and three-over at different parts of their rounds to finish under par. As always, the guys really competed and we expect some good play the last few days."
Oklahoma's Jase Summy recorded an eagle and eight birdies with a single bogey to take the individual lead with a 9-under par 62; that leads teammate Ryder Cowan by two strokes.
The second round will commence Tuesday with a shotgun at 12:30 p.m. MDT; Colorado will be paired with Georgia, Boise State and Southern Illinois and will tee off between the No. 4 and No. 6 holes. The third and final round will also have a 12:30 p.m. MDT shotgun on Wednesday, which will conclude CU's action this fall.
NOTES: The temperature settled in the low 80s by mid-morning, under mostly cloudy skies with occasional wind gusts from 8-10 miles per hour … There are 19 teams from 15 states and 11 athletic conferences competing here over the three days; this is the fifth straight year the Buffaloes are entered … CU has enjoyed great success here, as three of its top 14 tournament scores in relation to par (54 holes) were recorded here in 2021, 2022 and 2024 (with two runner-up and a fourth-place finish to show for those efforts) … The average score for all 120 rounds Monday was 70.47 … There are 71 players under par and 13 others who turned in even-par efforts in the first round … Despite those figures, nine holes player over-par Monday (and nine under); CU's scorers were plus-9 on the nine toughest and 17-under on the nine that were subpar by the field … The five CU scorers played the par-4's tied for the third-best at 4-under (OU and TCU were 8-under to lead), the par-5's at 8-under (tied for ninth; North Florida was 15-under to top all); but the par-3's at 6-over, tied for last in the field (Oklahoma played them the best, but at only 4-under par) … Colorado had the fifth-most birdies (21; Oklahoma leads with 27), and the fifth-most pars (58; East Tennessee State had the most with 67); the Buffs are tied for the fewest bogeys (7), but had four double bogeys, tied for the third-most … This was the ninth straight subpar round as a team, tying the school record, and the 12th in 13 rounds thus far season; the school best of 29 was set last year, with 25 in 2017-18 the second.
