Colorado looks for its second consecutive win over a ranked opponent
WACO, Texas — The Colorado Buffaloes continue deep in the heart of Texas, taking on the No. 20 Baylor Bears on Sunday at Betty Lou Mays Field (Noon MT/ESPN+).
Colorado (9-1-2, 3-0-1) is fresh off its upset of No. 7 TCU, 3-1, in Fort Worth on Thursday. The win against the Horned Frogs was the Buffs' first over a top 10 opponent since beating No. 10 Cal in Berkeley during the 2020 season, which was played in 2021. Thursday's win was also CU's highest-ranked win since defeating No. 7 Washington State, 3-1, in 2018 and the ninth-ever top-10 win in program history.
A win on Sunday would mark the Buffs' first back-to-back wins against ranked opponents since taking down No. 10 Cal, 3-2 in overtime, and No. 9 UCLA, 1-0, on Oct. 23 and Oct. 27, 2016, respectively.
"If you're going to compete for and win championships, you have to go on the road and beat good teams," head coach Danny Sanchez expressed after the win over TCU. "Baylor's every bit as good as the team we just played [TCU], but obviously a top 10 RPI. We will enjoy this [win over TCU], but it's all about Baylor now."
The goal-scoring trio of Jace Holley, Emerson Layne and Hope Leyba all contributed against TCU on Thursday. Holley scored her ninth goal of the season to even the score at 1-1, while Layne picked up the game-winner with her fourth of the season. Leyba added on with her NCAA-leading 14th goal of the year, having now scored in three straight matches for the second time this season. The trio has combined for 27 of CU's 35 total goals this season.
Baylor (8-1-2, 3-1-0) has done a complete 180 from last season, dispatching Iowa State, 3-0, at home on Thursday, to surpass its 2-5-4 Big 12 record from a year ago.
The Bears have been solid on the defensive end this season, having conceded only three goals all year. BU goalkeeper Azul Alvarez ranks second in the NCAA with her eight shutouts and is third in the nation with a .273 goals-against average.
