Buffs Remain In Second At Ron Moore
October 04, 2025 | Women's Golf
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. – Colorado women's golf is in second place after two rounds of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at the University of Denver Golf Course.
The Buffaloes couldn't recapture the scoring magic from their 12-under-par first-day effort on Friday, carding a 5-over round on Saturday. But it was enough to hold onto second place overall at 7-under, although they're now tied for that spot as Texas State caught them after a round of 2-under.
Vanderbilt, ranked No. 7 in the latest MIZUNO WGCA Coaches Poll, extended its overall lead to 11 strokes, with a 1-under round to move to 18-under overall.
Similar to Friday's first round, Colorado had some early struggles on the front nine, but they were more pronounced in the second round. The Buffaloes had just two birdies on that side of the course and in the process dropped seven strokes from their team score.
Colorado had a little more success later in the round, playing the back nine at 2-under, but nowhere near Friday's late-day surge that saw the Buffaloes go 12-under on that side and have only two collective holes below par.
"It felt like a completely different course today," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "We really tried to embrace the challenge. Whereas yesterday it felt like the whole team got hot with the putter, today we just didn't. But given the conditions, we played solid. We just had some cold putters."
Despite the lack of scoring, the DU course played harder on Saturday for the entire field. The wind played a considerable factor, especially for the leaders group that included the Buffaloes, which teed off last. While winds were calm for the first parings at 8:30 a.m., by the time the Buffs got going a little after 10, they were greeted with constant winds with gusts from 25-35 miles per hour the entire afternoon.
Even with the wind, Colorado still had the fifth-best score out of the 15-team field and only four teams played under-par rounds. The Buffaloes have three golfers in the top 10 and within striking distance of the lead.
Junior Carolyn Fuller, who entered the second round with a share of the lead, is tied for fifth at 4-under, only three shots out of the first spot currently held by Vanderbilt's Ava Merrill, who scored a 68 to get to 7-under through 36 holes.
Junior Maya McVey and sophomore Ellen O'Shaughnessy are both tied for eighth at 3-under. McVey had the better of the two rounds, carding a 73. McVey had a rough front nine, playing that side at 4-over. She rallied, though, playing a clean back nine at 3-under, finishing with a birdie on the par-5 18th.
O'Shaughnessy, playing as an individual, shot a 75 in the second round.
Freshman Brenna Higgins had Colorado's low round on Saturday with a 2-under, 70, and in the process vaulted 30 places in the standings as she enters the final round tied for 23rd at 1-over. Higgins had an early bogey on the par-5 second but erased it immediately with a birdie at the par-4 third.
Higgins played even through 16 and finished strong, ending her round with back-to-back birdies. She brushed off the gusting wind on the downhill par-3 17th with a wedge, landing it three feet from the hole and made the putt for the first birdie. On the par-5 18th, she was able to get near the green in two, and got up and down for the birdie to polish off her round.
"Huge round from Brenna today," Sheils said. "Just a really clutch round. She didn't hit her driver very well but she just kept getting herself back in play.
Vanessa Ngo is tied for 43rd at 4-over after a round of 75. Ngo fell to 3-over on the front before playing steady down the stretch, making par on her final 10 holes. Freshman Teemapat Pateetin is tied for 45th at 5-over, carding a 79 on Saturday.
Colorado will pair with Vanderbilt and Texas State again in Sunday's final round. The tournament shifts to a shotgun start on the final day, with that group atop the leaderboard, teeing off between the first and third tees at 8:45 a.m.
