Buffs In Sixth At San Diego State

February 10, 2025 | Women's Golf

SAN DIEGO, Calif.  — Colorado women's golf finds itself squarely in the middle of the pack after the first two rounds of the San Diego State Classic played at The Heights Golf Club, Monday.

No. 53 ranked Colorado is in sixth place after 36 holes with a score of 11-over-par, 587. The Buffaloes were slightly better in the morning session sitting in fifth after the first round at 4-over. Colorado slipped down one spot into sixth with a 7-over second round.

The Buffaloes are four strokes out of the top 5, with No. 48 BYU in fifth place at 7-over, 583. Top-ranked Stanford holds an enormous lead over the field at 28-under, a whopping 25 strokes over No. 35 UNLV, the only other team in the red today at 3-under. Georgia is in third at 3-over with Oregon State in fourth at 6-over.

Colorado has three golfers in the top 20 of the individual standings. Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch and freshman Sydney Givens are tied for 14th, with just each other after shooting even-par 144 over 36 holes. Junior Morgan Miller is in a three-way tie for 19th, three shots back of her teammates at 3-over, 147.

Eidhagen Harrouch had the best individual round of the day, opening with a 3-under 69 in the morning session. Beginning on the 14th, she was on fire from the start with five birdies on her first eight holes, including four in a row from the par-4 18th through the first three holes of the front. She ended up playing the final 10 holes at 2-over, but still good enough for her fourth round of the 60s this season which left her in a tie for fifth after one round.

Eidhagen Harrouch couldn't duplicate the magic during the afternoon round. She began with a bogey at the 14th but got back to even with her second birdie of the day at the 18th. Eidhagen Harrouch stayed even through the front nine, and at the turn, but suffered a large hiccup at the par-4 11th with a triple bogey. She regrouped to finish with pars on her last two holes to complete the round with a 75.

"It was really exciting to see Maria get off to such a hot start this morning and put together a solid round of 69," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "She's getting closer and closer to putting all the pieces together and she saw some big improvements in her putting that she worked on this past week."

Givens shot even 72 in both rounds. Like Eidhagen Harrouch, Givens got off to a tremendous start. She had three birdies over her first seven holes to get to 3-under early in the round. Consecutive bogeys on a pair of par 4s at the 5th and 6th knocked her back to 1-under, but she birdied the par-4 8th to get back to 2-under. She fell back to even after the turn to the back nine at the 10th and 12th.

Givens took advantage of the long holes, recording five birdies on the eight par 5s played on the day. She birdied the 2nd and 4th in both rounds, and that effort on the second go around on the course put her at 2-under. Givens was unable to build on that, dropping back to even with bogeys on the 13th and 14th for her team best fourth even par round of the season. Givens made par on 14 of 18 holes in the second round.

"Sydney continues to impress because no matter how she is striking the ball, or how she feels about any part of her game she always manages to put together a solid score," Sheils said. "She's just such a competitor. She's not the longest hitter on the team, and these par 5s are very reachable for the longer hitters, but probably not for Sydney. But the fact she was able to birdie five of eight just goes to show how great she is at course management and how strong she is with her wedges."

Miller made her Spring debut, and although it got off to a rough start with a triple on her first hole at the par-5 17th, she played even the final 35 holes of the day. Miller rallied to finish the first round with an even 72 by making birdie on three of her final seven holes. She shot a 75 in the afternoon session to finish the day at 3-over.

"Morgan tripled her first hole and then proceeded to shoot even par over the course of the next 35 and I know she still feels like she left some out there," Sheils said. "I feel like she played better than her score showed, which is always frustrating, but she's close."

Redshirt freshman Vanessa Ngo is tied for 40th at 8-over 152 and sophomore Carolyn Fuller is tied for 54th at 13-over, 157. Both golfers made significant improvements between the first and second rounds. Ngo started with a 79 in the first round but took six strokes off that the second time around with a 73. Fuller made a five-stroke improvement from round one to two, shooting a 76 in the afternoon session.

"The team is close," Sheils said. "We just need to find a way to all play well at the same time on the same day. I feel like a broken record, but truly each player is getting better each and every day and we're focused on continuing to do that. Tomorrow is another opportunity."

Stanford's Meja Ortengren is the individual leader at 14-under, highlighted by a 10-under 62 in the second round. She has a six-stroke lead over Georgia's Chantel El Chaib at 8-under.

Colorado will pair with Oregon State and BYU in Tuesday's final round beginning at the 5th through 9th holes at 9 a.m. MT with the shotgun start.
