Buffs Finish Sixth At San Diego State
February 11, 2025 | Women's Golf
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Colorado women's golf rallied from a tough start with a strong finish to take sixth place at the San Diego State Classic which concluded with the third round Tuesday at The Heights Golf Club.
No. 53 ranked Colorado finished the 54-hole tournament at 16-over-par, 880, following a team final round of 5-over. The Buffaloes finished just one stroke short of catching No. 48 BYU for fifth place and were only four shots out of the top three.
Top-ranked Stanford ran away with the team title at 31-under, 833, after a 3-under final round. The Cardinal were the only team to finish the 54-holes under par. No. 35 UNLV took second at 1-over, 865, followed by Georgia at 12-over and Oregon State at 13-over.
Colorado had to rally to secure its position in the top half of the field. Starting on the 5th through 9th holes, the Buffaloes' scoring golfers were already 6-over before making the full turn to the back nine. Colorado fell back to 12-over for its round through the back nine, managing only three birdies in its top four.
The Buffaloes turned things around down the stretch on the return to the front nine. Colorado tallied nine birdies coming in on the 1st through 5th holes, playing that stretch at 7-under to finish the round. All five Colorado golfers birdied the 475-yard par-5 2nd (only four count toward the team score).
"We started on the hardest part of the golf course so that was tough getting off to a rocky start, but it sure makes you feel better when you finish strong," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "I'm glad we took advantage of those two par 5s coming in."
Colorado's top three golfers scored just enough to register top 20 finishes. Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch was Colorado's low 54-hole scorer, tying for 13th with three others at 2-over, 218, after a final round 74. Freshman Sydney Givens was one-shot back of that group, tying for 17th at 3-over, 219, following a 75 on Tuesday. Junior Morgan Miller recorded her second top 20 finish of the season, tying for 19th at 4-over, 220, aided by a 73 over the closing 18 holes.
"I'm really proud that we had three top 20 finishes," Sheils said. "Overall we still left a lot of shots out there and I think everybody came away feeling they could have played better over the last three rounds, so that is disappointing. But as I told the team, they are getting better every day and making progress. This is one of those weeks it just didn't show up as we wanted on the scorecard."
Colorado's best round on the final day belonged to sophomore Carolyn Fuller at 1-under 71. Fuller, who improved her score by five strokes after both the first and second rounds, notched her fourth sub-par round of the season, finishing the tournament tied for 37th at 12-over, 228.
After just two birdies over 36 holes Monday, Fuller nabbed one right out of the gate on her second hole, the 392-yard par-4 10th. She dropped back to 1-over through the back nine but played 2-under the rest of the way, picking up birdies at the 2nd and 359-yard par-4 5th before finishing out her round with three-straight pars.
"I'm so happy for her (Fuller) bouncing back," Sheils said. "Not only does it feel great for her individually, but today it was huge for our team to stay in sixth (place)."
Redshirt freshman Vanessa Ngo tied for 41st overall at 13-over, 229, following a final round of 5-over 77. Ngo had five birdies on the day, including back-to-back at the par-3 16th and par-5 17th.
"We know we can finish better than we did today, but if you look back, zoom out and look at the big picture, we've come so far from where we were a year ago," Sheils said. "We're really trying to stay positive and know that we're getting better and better over time. Eventually, the higher finishes and scores are going to come."
Stanford's Meja Ortengren took medalist honors at 15-under, 201, outlasting her teammate Paula Martin Sampedro by eight strokes.
Colorado returns to action Feb. 24-25 at the Causeway Invitational, hosted by UC Davis at the Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento, Calif.
