SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Led by three top 10 individual finishes, Colorado women's golf placed third at the Causeway Invitational which wrapped up with the final round Tuesday at the Del Paso Country Club.
Junior Morgan Miller tied for fourth with BYU's Alexa Udom at 2-under-par 214, after shooting 70 in the final round. Freshman Sydney Givens and sophomore Carolyn Fuller tied four others for ninth overall at 1-over 217. Givens scored a 71 in the final round, vaulting up 12 spots from Monday's second round. Fuller finished with a 73 on Tuesday after consecutive rounds of even-par 72 on Monday.
Colorado was 6-over for the 54-hole event. The Buffaloes were 5-over on Tuesday, their highest of three rounds, but tied for the third-best round in the field and was good enough to move up one spot from Monday, leapfrogging No. 44 UC Davis which dropped back to fourth after an 11-over day.
Oregon State claimed the team title at 11-under, two strokes better than second-place Sacramento State at 9-under.
Miller enjoyed her best of six spring rounds on Tuesday with her 70, matching the best round of the tournament by a Colorado golfer. She began on the par-5 fourth, logging four-straight pars before picking up a birdie on the par-4 eighth. Miller had just two bogeys on the day at the par-3 12th and par-5 15th but responded immediately with birdies in both instances on par 5s at the 13th and 16th. She finished in style with a birdie on her 54th hole, the par-4 third, to clinch her fourth career top 5 finish.
Givens secured the second top 10 finish of her young career with her best of three rounds at the Causeway. She opened with pars on the eighth and ninth before snagging her first of two birdies at the par-4 10th. Givens went on to par the next eight holes before recording her second birdie on the par-5 first. She dropped a stroke on the fourth but stayed even over her final four holes for her sixth sub-par round of the season.
Fuller logged her first career top 10 finish after her 73 on Tuesday. She birdied two of her first four holes and stayed in the red at 1-under through 16 but dropped back to 1-over with bogeys at the fourth and fifth to close out.
"I was really happy to see the way Sydney, Morgan and Carolyn managed their way around the course today," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "We talked as a team about getting off to a better start today, which they did. The course was tougher, windy and the greens were firm. Three top 10s and Carolyn's best career finish, I was thrilled for them."
Redshirt freshman Vanessa Ngo tied for 38th at 8-over 224. Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch tied with two others for 41st, one shot back at 9-over. Both Ngo and Eidhagen Harrouch shot 79 in Tuesday's final round.
Freshman Ellen O'Shaughnessy, playing as an individual, tied for 44th at 10-over 226.
"One of our goals for this tournament was to avoid the big numbers and we did that with only three doubles," Sheils said. "We still have a lot of work to do on our par 5 scoring, but it's great to see the team competing. They've improved a lot, but they know they also left a lot of shots out there."
Oregon State's Kyra Ly went wire-to-wire for the individual title at 15-under 201, after a 70 in the final round, defeating Sacramento State's Caitlin Maurice by six strokes (-9). Sacramento State's Sneha Sharan edged Miller and Udom for third place at 3-under.
Colorado will resume its Spring season in just under three weeks at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational, March 17-18, at the UT Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
