Colorado Lacrosse Continues Homestand, Prepares for Marquette and Iona

March 10, 2025 | Lacrosse

The Buffs will go head-to-head with their first unranked opponents of the season in the Golden Eagles and Gaels

BOULDER – The Colorado lacrosse team (1-4, 0-0 Big 12) approaches the back end of this five-game stretch at home, hosting Marquette (4-2, 0-0 Big East) on Tuesday and Iona (1-5, 0-0 MAAC) on Saturday. The Buffs' game against the Golden Eagles will be at Kittredge Field on Mar. 11 at 1 p.m. MT, and they face the Gaels at Prentup Field on Mar. 15 at 12 p.m. MT.

These are the Buffs' third- and fourth-straight home games and first two games against unranked opponents this season. CU will face Marquette for the fifth time in program history, currently holding a four-game winning streak over the Golden Eagles all-time and having faced them last season, the Buffs coming up with a six-goal win, 17-11 (Mar. 8, 2024). This will be the first meeting between Colorado and Iona, and it's the Buffs' only game this season against an opponent in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Colorado took on its fifth ranked opponent, second battle in the IWLCA top-five, of the season in No. 5 Michigan at Kittredge Field over the weekend. The Buffs held the Wolverines scoreless in the first quarter and under five goals in the first half. The Buffs defense held strong through the third quarter, but the Wolves gained their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter. Unable to capitalize on the offensive end, the Black and Gold fell, 12-7.

OPENING DRAW (TL;DR)
  • CU is led by 12th-year head coach Ann Elliott Whidden, who has led the Buffs to a 123-71 (.634) record as CU's first and only head lacrosse coach. Coach Whidden has led the Buffs to three NCAA tournament appearances.
  • After stints in the MPSF and Pac-12, Colorado is playing the 2025 season in the Big 12 Conference for its inaugural lacrosse season. In conference play, the Buffs will go head-to-head with Arizona State and Cincinnati from the Big 12, as well as Florida, UC Davis and San Diego State who are conference affiliates. CU lacrosse is 64-26 (.711) all-time in conference play.
  • As a team, the Buffs were 100% on clears against Michigan last week, bringing the season percentage to 91.6%. Colorado is currently second in the Big 12 for shooting percentage (.320) and fourth in the Big 12 for both ground balls per game (14.40) and caused turnovers per game (7.00).
  • Gr. A Madeline Pisani recorded her 10th goal of the season on Saturday against Michigan and had an assist (Mar. 8). With 85 career goals, she is three goals away from entering the top-10 for career goals at Colorado. Pisani is also fourth in the Big 12 for shots per game (6.40), and her 4.50 shots on goal per game put her at 55th in the NCAA.
  • Jr. M Lily Assini is eighth in the Big 12 for assists per game (1.40) and recorded three assists against the Wolverines. She is also 10th in the Big 12 for draw controls per game (2.60) and managed four versus Michigan. Assini has 82 draw controls in her career, and she currently holds the same number of goals as assists (21). She also has one fewer groundball than points with 41.
  • Fr. GK Elena Oh had another great game against the Wolves, coming up with 11 saves and two ground balls -- her second game in a row with double-digit saves. Oh is second in the Big 12 for save percentage (.468) and third for saves per game (9.67).
  • Jr. D Jess Peluso finished Saturday's competition with four ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls. Peluso now leads the Big 12 in ground balls per game (2.60) and comes in third for draw controls per game (5.00). Her 5.00 DCs per game are good for 50th in the NCAA.
  • Gr. A Kendall Havill had two goals against Michigan, her second game this season with two goals -- the other against USC (Feb. 16). These goals move Havill to six points from 200 career points.
  • Gr. A Morgan Pence recorded her ninth career hat trick against the Wolverines, her first of the season and her first since returning from injury.
  • Sr. D Katie McLean currently comes in fifth in the Big 12 for caused turnovers per game (1.40). She recorded a ground ball against Michigan.

ROAM WITH THE BUFFS: The Buffs' games against the Golden Eagles and the Gaels will be broadcast on ESPN+. Fans can also follow the Colorado games through live stats with links available at CUBuffs.com.

EYES ON THE PRIZE: Jr. M Lily Assini currently sits at 82 career draw controls, 18 away from 100. Gr. A Kendall Havill, who came to the Buffs from Colorado College with 190 points (152g, 38a), is approaching her 200th career point. She currently sits at 194 points, six away from achieving this milestone.

STRUCK GOLD: This will be Colorado's fifth matchup with Marquette in the program's history and first game against an unranked opponent this season. The Buffs currently lead the rivalry with the Golden Eagles, 4-0, and look to continue this win streak on Tuesday. CU faced Marquette last year in Milwaukee, Wisc., and recorded a six-goal win over the Eagles, 17-11 (Mar. 8, 2024). The Buffs have locked up the Golden Eagles by as many as 14 (20-6, 2017) and as few as two (10-8, 2016).

IT'S A GAEL THING: This will be the first meeting between Colorado and Iona, and it's the Buffs' only game this season against an opponent in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). This is the second time this season that the lacrosse Buffs will meet a new opponent, the last being then-No. 25 Army (W, 12-6, Feb. 28). The last and only other time the Buffs have played a MAAC opponent was in 2016 when they beat Marist at home, 19-4 (Mar. 21).

#4 CAPTAIN HAVILL: Washington native Gr. A Kendall Havill grew up on Bainbridge Island across the sound from Seattle and had to take a boat to all her games (lacrosse and basketball) in high school. Havill's mother, Sara, played tennis at University of Redlands, and her cousin currently attends CU and will graduate at the end of the semester. Havill can also play guitar and wants to work in sports management or communications after graduation.

#18 R/L ASSINI: Both of Jr. M Lily Assini's parents, Laurie and Matt, attended CU (1990-1992), and her sister, Izzy, attends CU currently as well. Her father, Matt, played tennis for two years at Denison and her great-grandfather ran track and field at Harvard. Fun fact: Lily is ambidextrous.
