Track and Field Surge Into Outdoor Season with 19 PRs

RALEIGH, N.C.; GOLDEN, Colo. — Colorado's distance crew came out strong at the Raleigh Relays, while the sprinters and multis took advantage of good weather closer to home at the Mines Midweek Meet, combining for 19 personal bests times and marks and a strong start to the outdoor season.

Colorado's men's distance group opened the Raleigh Relays on Thursday with standout performances.
Kole Mathison ran a personal best of 8:37.68 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, closing with a 1:04.44 final lap to post the fastest time in his section. His time ranks second in the NCAA this season, as the meet currently holds the top seven marks nationally.

In the 5,000 meters, Chris Cherry clocked a big personal best of 13:42.00, cutting more than 13 seconds off his previous best of 13:55.09 from his time at Tennessee. Charles Robertson also notched a PR at 13:58.93, while freshman Ethan Edgeworth opened his outdoor season with a strong 13:38.90. Lukas Haug wasn't far behind in 13:40.80, adding to a deep showing from the Buffs.

The momentum carried into the 10,000 meters, where five Buffs recorded lifetime bests. James Overberg led the group in 28:20.78, with Dean Casey right behind in 28:21.32—shaving more than 17 seconds off his previous best. Freshman Jake Liebert ran 28:42.56 in his debut, just ahead of Grady Rauba, who clocked a new PR of 28:42.72. Wilson Georges closed out the group with a 10K debut of 28:48.86.

Mines Midweek Triangular Meet

With shifting weather canceling the weekend slate, Colorado's sprint, distance, and multi-event squads pivoted to a midweek meet in the foothills—and took full advantage of the clear skies, racking up 12 more personal bests.

Freshman Myla Wilkes continues to impress, clocking a personal-best 23.55 to win the 200 meters. Riley Burkey ran 25.10 for a PR and also leapt a personal-best 5.75m in the long jump.
Emma Pollak recorded the top time in the 400-meter hurdles at 1:00.26, while Abby Miller followed with a PR of 1:01.38. Nylah Perry returned to action for the first time since the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, clocking 1:02.82, four seconds off her personal best.

Multi-event athlete Riley Ward turned in a strong showing in the high jump, clearing 1.71 meters to come within centimeters of her personal best. In the throws, Elena Opp delivered a career-best marks in both the discus (43.40m) and the hammer throw (56.90m), while Amanda Opp added solid performances of 42.60 meters in the discus and 55.98 meters in the hammer.

Up Next: The women's distance group will take to the track at the Raleigh Relays on Friday, beginning with the 1,500 meters. The full team returns to action next week at the Jerry Quiller Classic Track Meet at Potts Field, celebrating Senior Day and Alumni C Club Day.
