Buffs In 14th At Big 12 Championship

April 15, 2025 | Women's Golf

HOCKLEY, Texas - Colorado women's golf is in 14th place after Tuesday's first round of the Big 12 Conference Championship at the Houston Oaks Country Club.

The Buffaloes had a rocky start to the championship, shooting 20-over-par, 304, on the 6,259-yard par 71 Houston Oaks Course. Colorado is three shots behind No. 37 Baylor and Texas Tech who are tied for 12th at 17-over.

No. 29 Iowa State and No. 19 Arizona share the first-round lead at 1-over, three strokes up on No. 26 Houston.

The Buffaloes were bitten by the big numbers in the first round. Colorado had nine holes of double bogey or worse, the most in the 14-team field.

Prospects looked decent in the first half of the round. Colorado was hovering around the top five early, playing the front nine at 6-over. The Buffaloes were still only 7-over through 12 but things began to go south after that. Colorado played the five-hole stretch of the 13th through 17th at a combined 11-over, managing just one birdie during that span.

"It was a disappointing start today, but we have a lot of golf left," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "With a good round tomorrow, we can put ourselves right back in the championship. I thought we actually played a lot of solid golf until those last six holes. Many of our mistakes came from poor course management, so we've come up with a better plan for tomorrow and are ready to go execute."

"This is a difficult golf course - very long, well bunkered, and lots of tough Bermuda lies around the greens. It will be hard to go low here, but if we can limit our bogeys and doubles, we will be in great shape."

Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch had Colorado's best round of the day at 3-over, 74 and is tied for 27th overall. After a bumpy start, at 3-over through five, she recorded the lone eagle in the entire tournament field on the 505-yard par 5 eighth. She added a birdie on the 500-yard par 5 11th to get back to even and stayed there through 13, before dropping back to 3-over to finish the round.

Junior Morgan Miller and freshman Sydney Givens are tied for 39th overall after matching rounds of 4-over, 75. Miller had a good front nine, and was 2-under through seven with birdies at a pair of par 3s at the fifth and seventh but played the back nine at 5-over. Givens' struggles came on the front, where she shot 4-over, before playing the back nine at even, recording two of Colorado's three birdies on that side of the course.

Redshirt Vanessa Ngo is 67th overall after a round of 9-over, 80. Sophomore Francesca Sumcad is in 70th at 13-over.

"I think Maria, Morgan, and Sydney all played well today, better than their final scores indicate," Sheils said. "I know they're all capable of putting a low round up. Vanessa and Franky are ready to bounce back too, they are so competitive and working hard to get better. The key is to remain patient and take this one shot at a time."

Just seven of the 70 players in the field shot under par on Tuesday. Houston's Maelynn Kim, Arizona's Carolina Melgrati and Kansas State's Carla Bernat are tied for the individual lead after shooting 2-under, 69. Four others are one stroke back at 1-under.

Colorado will pair with Texas Tech in Tuesday's second round. The groups will begin off the No. 1 tee at 7 a.m. MT.
