Buffs Looking Ahead to Delaware
September 02, 2025 | Football
BOULDER — One of the most anticipated collegiate debuts in recent history for the Colorado Buffaloes is set to happen this coming Saturday at Folsom Field when No. 10 Julian Lewis lines up behind center against Delaware (1:30 p.m., Fox).
Colorado (0-1) is moving past its opening-week 27-20 loss to Georgia Tech and focusing on what's next. A week after saying both quarterbacks, Kaidon Salter and Lewis, would get time at the helm of the offense, head coach Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders solidified that the freshman Lewis would get snaps against the Blue Hens this coming Saturday.
"He's playing," Coach Prime exclaimed. "He's playing this week for sure. I know when I'm going to see him. You just don't know when you're going to see him."
Lewis, a 17-year-old freshman from Carrollton, Ga., was a highly touted five-star recruit by ESPN and Rivals and a back-to-back Gatorade Georgia Football Player of the Year selection when he made his decision to come to CU. Lewis and Salter competed head-to-head throughout fall camp, trying to be the QB to follow Shedeur Sanders in his departure to the NFL.
Ultimately, Salter earned the starting nod in week one with Coach Prime insinuating that both QBs would play against the Yellow Jackets. Salter wound up taking every snap for the Buffs, closing with 159 yards passing, an eight-yard passing touchdown and a seven-yard rushing score.
"I love that kid [Lewis], man," Coach Prime explained. "I really do, and I want him to be extremely successful. Sometimes you don't want to rush things. Sometimes you don't want to delay things. You want to make sure the timing is right. I don't' think the time was appropriate last week. The way the game was flowing, the rhythm of the game. But this week, I made up my mind already before. Now, he's going to play. I don't give a darn about the flow of nothing."
Some critics jumped to conclusions on Tuesday, asking if that would mean Lewis would possibly get the start against Delaware.
"Can we take this one thing at a time?" Coach Prime asked. "I just told you he was playing. You saying he's starting? Come on, work with me, baby. Just work with me. He's playing, alright."
When Lewis steps on the field, he will become one of the youngest players to play for the Black & Gold in program history.
Week 1 to Week 2
Throughout the years, coaches have noted that in somewhat cliché fashion, the greatest improvement to be had as a team is from the first week to the second week.
Coach Prime has not been one of those coaches, balking at the idea of the question on Tuesday. When counted with the fact that seven-time national championship coach Nick Saban said the exact thing over the weekend, Prime relented a bit.
"Coach Saban ain't coaching right now," Prime joked. "He's the greatest of all time. He can say whatever he wants to say. Whatever Coach Saban says, I'm with.
"It [not having a preseason] don't matter. You see what you got. Those first few games, you kind of see what you got. You kind of see who's who. You've got to understand when you're flipping rosters like all colleges are now, except for quarterbacks, teams that have the most ability are the ones that had quarterbacks in-house. They matured, and they're running the same system. But others, you got to figure out what you got on the offensive side, the defensive side, as well as special teams."
Travis Hunter, Dad
Former Buff and current Jacksonville Jaguar, Travis Hunter, and his wife, Leanna, announced the arrival of their first child last week. The couple revealed their newborn son in a video announcement on YouTube.
"Oh, my God, I'm taking a deep breath, because I love him to life," Coach Prime said of Hunter. "I love him like he's a son. It's funny when your son is now a father. That's why I had to really step back. It's a beautiful thing. The thing that I told him is, 'Let's correct all the things that we purposely think that we didn't receive as a child, and let's correct that in our fatherhood. Let's do that. And no matter what happens in life, let's make sure we're the best darn father that ever walked.' That's what I told him, and I'm proud of him, and I love him to life and miss him dearly."
Hunter, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, was selected No. 2 overall by Jacksonville in the 2025 draft. He will make his NFL debut when the Jaguars take on the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
