Lampron Records Career-High 18 Tackles As Buffs Are Defeated
TEMPE, Ariz. – Gideon ESPN Lampron recorded a career-high 18 tackles, but the Colorado Buffaloes could not overcome the 10-point deficit in a 20-10 loss to Arizona State on Saturday night at Mountain America Stadium.
The Buffaloes dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in Big 12 play, while the Sun Devils improved to 5-4 and 3-3.
"They made plays, and we didn't," head coach Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders said. "Didn't see quit. Didn't see anybody being lethargic. Didn't see them giving up, by any means."
Colorado was held scoreless in the first half after four punts and two failed fourth-down attempts. An apparent 74-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Isaac Wilson to wide receiver Ernest Campbell was erased by an ineligible receiver downfield, taking away the Buffs' biggest opportunity to break through.
Despite forcing three first-half three-and-outs, CU surrendered a pair of second-quarter touchdowns and entered halftime trailing 17-0.Â
Colorado continued to chip away at the Sun Devils' lead in the second half, orchestrating a 61-yard drive that was capped off with a 39-yard field goal by Elliott Arnold in the third quarter.Â
In the fourth quarter, Colorado remained resilient, marching 75 yards downfield to convert on a touchdown pass from Wilson to wide receiver Joseph Williams.
Williams closed the game with 121 yards on seven receptions, highlighted by his fourth-quarter touchdown.Â
"Every time he touched the ball, he was electric," Sanders said of Williams.
Colorado's defense held the Sun Devils to just three points after halftime. Lampron led the charge, recording a career-high 18 tackles, including 10 solo stops, 3.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks on the night.Â
"I'm glad I'm putting those numbers up there," Lampron said. "But you know, I literally don't care if we're not winning games. It doesn't matter. I came here to win games, and that's why they brought all of us here."
Despite a valiant second-half effort, the Buffaloes were unable to erase the deficit and suffered their ninth straight conference road defeat.
"The defense got a lot of stops for us today, and we didn't execute on offense," Williams said. "You'll never win games putting up 10 points."
"We've got some guys that the team looks up to," Sanders added. "And they set the right example, not only on game day, but in practice as well. So I don't see anybody having a pity party or hanging their head or quitting whatsoever. We've just got to do better, and that starts with me."
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Arizona State drew first blood thanks to a lengthy, six-minute drive on their first possession of the first quarter. The Sun Devils received the Buffs punt on their own 25 and proceeded to march 61 yards on 13 plays before the Colorado defense stiffened at 17, forcing ASU to settle for a 31-yard field goal from Carson Smith to put the home team on top 3-0.
Colorado's lone highlight of the first half ended up not even counting, as Wilson hit wideout Campbell for a 74-yard touchdown catch-and-run that seemingly gave the Buffs the lead, but the sensational play was wiped out by a penalty for an ineligible man downfield, ultimately leading to a CU punt.   Â
The Sun Devils padded their lead in the second quarter on another long drive punctuated by two big plays by former Buffs wideout Omarion Miller. On 3rd-and-8 from midfield, quarterback Jake Fette fired a laser to Miller over the middle to move the chains, and on the very next play, Fette called Miller's number again, this time on a 33-yard completion down the sideline that brought ASU to the CU 7. On 4th-and-goal from the CU 1, ASU snapped the ball directly to running back Cardae Mack, who, despite facing a stout rush of Buffaloes, dropped a pass to Fette in the endzone for a touchdown, extending the Sun Devils' lead to 10-0 with 11:21 to go in the half. Â
On 4th-and-6 from the Arizona State 34, Wilson dropped back to pass and kept retreating until he was sacked for a 24-yard loss, setting the ASU offense up in CU territory on the 42. The Buffs defense stiffened yet again, forcing the Sun Devils into a 3rd-and-14 from the Colorado 34, but Fette delivered a pass to wideout Reed Harris for a touchdown, giving the home team a commanding 17-0 lead at half. Â
CU's offense was largely shut down in the first half, as ASU held them to 103 total yards and just 10 yards rushing.  Â
The Buffs got on the scoreboard in the second half by giving the Sun Devils a taste of their own medicine courtesy of a lengthy 15-play drive. After forcing ASU, who had intercepted Wilson on the Sun Devils 28, into a three-and-out, the Buffs methodically marched down the field, converting four third downs. The biggest play for CU came on 3rd-and-14 from the Buffs 44, when Wilson delivered a quick pass to Campbell, who sprinted 25 yards down to the Arizona State 31. The drive would stall at the Sun Devils 21, however, thanks in part to a costly holding penalty, forcing the Buffaloes to settle for a 39-yard field goal by Elliott Arnold as time expired in the third quarter to cut the lead to 17-3.   Â
After a 21-yard field goal by Smith extended the home team's lead to 20-3, the Buffs took over and again marched down the field. Wilson connected with wide receiver Joseph Williams, who rumbled 48 yards down to the ASU 24. The drive seemingly petered out at the Sun Devils 15, and CU lined up for a field goal, but Arizona State was flagged for roughing the kicker, giving the Buffs a new set of downs and new life at the Sun Devils 7. Wilson immediately took advantage, finding Williams at the 2, who dragged four ASU defenders into the end zone to give the Buffaloes their first touchdown of the game, cutting the home team's lead to 20-10, which ended up being the final score.  Â
